its just happened so quick.. very late last night we heard our nearly 3yo JRT being sick, went to check on her and apart from the sick nothing was out of the ordinary she was wagging her tail and seemed okay so I clean up settle her down go back bed.

get up early this morning to find watery blood so straight off to emergency vet where they reckon she has eaten something that she shouldn't have so the will taken some bloods and get her on antibiotics, again the dog didn't seem too bothered then all of a sudden watery bloody stuff starts coming out of her and she has a seizure, vet has to put her down there and then. have had dogs all my life and have never experienced anything like this..

got 3 kids and a wife in tears :(

I know exactly what you are going through
I lost my 12 year old retriever a fortnight ago to cancer, he stopped eating and then had a very funny turn. We took him to the Vets he found a lump and a subsequent investigation showed he had secondaries everywhere and we decided to let him go whilst still under the anaesthetic. It hurts so badly.
He was a rescue dog who we rescued at 11 mths old after losing our first dog, so we took the decision to rescue another - Paddy another Golden Retriever arrived on Saturday and he's helping us and our other dog Ben get over the loss. It might not work for you but its helped us.

Another dog will come along at some point have always had them, when I was 1 we got a black lab and I was 17 when he died.. I am 41 now and I don't think I have been more than 6 months without one..

Its the shock of a spritely young dog bouncing around the garden playing ffwd 8 hrs later being put down than has knocked us aback. Its one of those how fragile life can be moments.

Really sorry to hear that, animals are such an integral part of the family. We had an experience a few years ago with one of our cats, a beautiful Chocolate Point Balanese who never showed outward signs of illness until one day just collapsed. He had heart disease, and subsequent failure that we lost him to there as then.
 
I'm so sorry. This is awful.

I hope you have plenty of good times to remember!
 
So sorry to hear that, its always a blow to lose a pet.
It sounds like she ate something that may have had rat poison in it (warfarin or similar), I'm no vet buy one of my cats suffered something very similar and they think he may have eaten a rat that had either died or been severely disabled by rat poison and it was therefore passed on, knowing how good ratters JRT are it may have been the same and sadly she was just doing what came naturally to her, nothing you could have done about it.
Unforunately people dont realise when they put rat poison down it can have an affect on innocent animals too.

Reading from your mail I'm sure she had 3 wonderful years and sadly that's something some pets just dont get. When you get over this I am sure you'll be able to get another animal.

Very sad to hear. A dog is as much a member of the family as anyone else.
 
A sad read David, best wishes go out to you.
Pretty much know how you feel as lost our mate in similar circumstances a few months ago and it's heartbreaking, people can think its only a dog but it's far from it, they become mates, friends and a bit part of the family.
The best way I tried to deal with it is to think of the great times and think they are not suffering, reading this brings the feelings back and I'd lie if I said its still not hard.

I know how your feeling David, put my little girl too sleep 3 weeks ago and it broke my heart.
Try and get the family talking about the good times you had with Poppy and it might make things a little less painful :hug:

Many thanks again, let the missus read the post and it gave her an insight into why I like this forum so much.

Did a bit of shopping early (mainly wine) and all 5 of us couldnt hold the tears back when we got home to no dog to greet us.
 
So so sorry to hear that David.
We've lost dogs over the years, but it's always been in old age - I can't imagine what the shock must be like with it happening so suddenly to a young dog.

I hope you can take some comfort from the fact that she didn't seem overly distressed or bothered by it right up until the last.

Sorry to hear. Losing pets is horrible. Some people don't understand they can be family members.. not just pets.
 
So sorry to hear this David.

I've lost a few dogs over the years. It's never an easy thing to go through but with young dogs it's somehow all the more tragic.

You'll be hurting now and it takes a while but in time the bad memories fade and the good times stick.
