I am possibly going to Abingdon in a few weeks for the weekend on a caravan rally. The others are not interested in photography so I won't be able to spend too much time searching for landscape locations. Does anyone have any suggestions for sunrise shots? I think sunset will be spent in the pub.

I'm from Abingdon, is the rally at the Cricket club? I'm just off out for the day but when I get back tonight I put up some ideas. How close to Abingdon do you want to stay?

Hi Graham
Thanks for your reply.
Yes the rally is at the CC it is a meeting of Fleetwood caravan owners, I doubt it will be very large. As far as distance, I am happy to travel as far as is reasonable but my preference would be somewhere easily accessible for a sunrise shoot.

Gordon a few suggestions for you, I don't know how well you know Abingdon so if you want any more info on how to find/get to these let me know.

One of go to places mainly because its very close and easy to get to is St Helens Wharf, its nearly opposite to the cc on the other side of the river.

Starting by the church you can shoot on or above the slipway, shooting towards the sunrise

If you walk away form the church just before the bridge you get a fairly decent view the other way down the river.

Cross the bridge these is a little garden with some nice views and if you go just pass that you can get some nice views of St Helens Wharf and the church (there are a few benches there)

You can get some lovely views from the other side of the river (the cc side) from close to the bridge, has you got into abingdon just left of the bridge you can get some lovely light on the Church, depends when you are coming you can to many boats along the bank.

Also if you walk upstream right from the same bridge there are possibilities between the bridge and the weir.

Further afield Whittenham Clumps are nice going right from the car park you can get some lovely skies over Brightwell Barrow

Also some rather nice benches here

Another possibility is Days lock at Little Wittenham - go into Little Wittenam and park opposite the church carry on walking down the lane cross the river turn right out of the gate.

If you want any more info or help just me know.

Hi Graham
That information is brilliant, just what I needed and the kind of views I was hoping for, thank you.

I do not know Abingdon at all so any directions would be appreciated.

Glad to help Gordon

To get St Helens Wharf turn left out of the cc, when you reach the market square and town hall turn first left (so the town hall is on your right, there are 2 lefts here take the first, its about 30 yards past the Crown & Thistle hotel)
into East St Helens St, when you reach a junction (the church us right in front of you) if you're driving turn right into West St Helens St (church will be behind you now) there is parking if you take the 2nd left (free for 2 hours).
Walk out of the car park back the way you have come go down the road towards the river (church on right), where the 1st shot was taken is where you reach the river. If your walking do the same but when you reach the church turn left and you are at the river. For the other spots from here if you walk down St Helens Wharf, cross the bridge and little garden is on your left (it is little), the final place I mentioned is reached if you go through the garden turn left and its about 10 yards on your left. While your down here if you enter the churchyard there are some lovely old Elm houses.

Wittenham clumps turn right out of the cc keep on the A415 until you reach Clifton Hamden turn right at the traffic lights ( there is place to stop after approx 50 yards on your left where there is a nice church above the river, depending on river conditions could be worth a look) follow the road till you reach Long Wittenham then take the first left to Little Wittenham, here at the T junction turn right follow this road for approx half a mile and the car park is on your left. The 2 photos where taken from th clump on your right as you leave the car park. Its worth walking round both clumps.

For Days Lock follow the same directions until you reach the T junction at little Wittenham here turn left an follow the road until you reach the church, park on the right and just follow the rod down after 100 yards you will cross the river turn left and you there. You can walk here from the clumps car park, if you take the path straight form the car park it goes to the church.

Also if you walk out of the cc to the river (it borders the river at the far end) and if you turn right you can walk to the bridge and get some nice views back towards the church if you carry on past the bridge there are posiblities between here and the weir ( approx half mile away) although for me this stretch always seem better in the winter.

Hope this all make sense if not just let me know, if you would like some company let me know when and if I'm free I'll join you.

Only glad to help, Gordon. I get enough help of these forums so only happy to return some.

They're amazing Graham - the benefits of getting up early, eh!

Thanks Mitch, my favourite time although must admit don't do so much in the summer, a bit to early at my age.
