Hi,

Anybody used/got the Sony A350?

Got a chance to but the A300 for £250 and the A350 for £350.

Is the A350 much better than the A300 (i know its only more megapixels but is the picture better?)

Matt

Hi Matt,
I don't have either of these cameras but seeing as nobody else has responded....

The fundamental difference between the A300 and the A350 is the resolution. Other than the sensor they are essentially the same camera. Both models produce excellent image quality and from examples I've seen using these cameras they seem to cope equally well in all conditions.
So the choice really comes down to whether you need the extra resolution. I have an A100 (with the same 10.8mp sensor as the A300) and an A700 with a 12.2mp sensor. The extra MP give me a little more scope for cropping but produces considerably larger files. When printed at A3 I can't tell the difference between the two. So think about the type of shots you'll be taking and decide if you need the extra mp's or if you'd be better off putting the £100 towards an additional lens.

£250 for an A300? where?! blimey only 2 weeks ago I paid £250 for an A200! lucky man.
Yea as spanner said, the main difference is the resolution because the A300 picks up where the A200 left off in terms of live preview (I think thats the main big difference), then the A350 steps up the resolution.
I would seriously be tempted by the A350 at that price though tbh

think the a350 has a slightly different menu or additional menu display

i have the A350,and it's a cracking camera IMO.as whats been said, the only real difference between it and the A300 is the resolution, although it's also said that the A300 handles noise a little better at higher ISO's...other than that, there's none other significant difference.both prices you've quoted are excellent prices as i paid £400 body only 2 months ago,and my daughters friend paid £350 for her A300 with 18-70 kit lens...

i went into jessops and the bloke told me that there is no difference apart from an extra 4 megapixels

megapixels equals resolution :rules:

A300 = 10.2MP

A350 = 14.2MP

to be honest, unless your gonna print out big stuff like A3,A2 etc...then 10.2MP is plenty,BUT14.2MP will allow you to crop closer with little loss in image quality........

I was about to buy an A200 but if the A300 is available for only £250 then Id have that. Can I ask where from please?

only real place for the a300 i have seen is jessops with the lens kit at £350

then other places sell the a350 with same lens kit at £400, so in the long run, maybe the extra £50 spend might be more benificial

i was using the A300 and the A350 on saturday to shoot my brothers wedding, and there's not much to choose between them, but i would say that theres less noise on the A300 at higher ISO's(400 and 800).i would also say it felt strange using the A300 without the battery grip,as i have one on my A350

are the menu's identical and display 100% identical on screen?

yes, pretty much the same...there were one or two small differences, but not that i can remember them,or that the differences were that noticeable(in the menu section).

do you think the a350 is worth the extra money?
or save the money for something like flash gun or extra lens etc.?

but think it's worth going to jessops when i get time to play with both.

not really sure, although it will allow you to crop an image without adversely affecting the quality...or so i'm lead to believe...due to the bigger resolution.

what would i do(if i had to choose again)now?
probably still get the A350,but i wouldn't have a problem getting the A300 if funds only allowed it...

you pays your money........;)

thanks for the reply
i've got my heart set on getting the sony 18-200 @ £200 instead of the 18-70 lens kit, due to the versatility of my first lens.

then the body a350 vs a300
i was swinging on getting the a350, because with the lens kits 18-70 can be had for £400 (minus £50 cash back)

however now i'm looking body only, best prices are:
a300 £290 (minus £40 cash back) = £250
a350 £350 (minus £50 back back) = £300

so with spending more on the lens, i don't think i'm going to stretch to the a350, for the extra 4mp.
my current nikon d40 is only at 6mp (and to be honest i'm not sure i shoot in full large size resolution generally), so even with the capacity of 10mp, i think it would be surfice.

i would go for the a350, over a300 if there were many recommendations and if it had more features, better menu etc. but it seems it doesn't.

having just done a jessops comparison of the two, main differences were:
a300 10mp Max. 2.5 fps with viewfinder, max. 2 fps in live view mode (approx.)
a350 14mp Max 3FPS with viewfinder. 2FPS in live view mode., Shooting Capacity: JPEG (L size, Fine): Until memory card is full. RAW: 6 frames. RAW + JPEG: 3 frames.

but if i can get the 18-200 with a350 at the same price as the a300, i will opt for the a350 ;-)

a300 10mp Max.3.0 fps with viewfinder, max. 2 fps in live view mode (approx.)

Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 Compared to Sony Alpha DSLR-A300
The next obvious comparison is of course against Sony's Alpha A300. This is the closest model to the A350, with the only difference being sensor resolution, continuous shooting speed and price: the A300 has 10.2 Megapixels and shoots at 3fps, while the A350 has 14.2 Megapixels and shoots at 2.5fps. The lower resolution sensor makes the A300 slightly cheaper, but otherwise, they are identical.

On the surface it would therefore simply appear to be a choice of paying more for a higher resolution sensor - albeit with a slight compromise in continuous shooting if you opted for the A350. But packing more pixels onto the same sized sensor traditionally has a negative impact on noise and dynamic range, so it could be argued the A300 is the discerning photographer's choice. Maybe, but we believe the A300 uses the same sensor as the A200, which exhibits higher noise than many 10 Megapixel rivals at 800 ISO and above. Until we test an A300 we can't say for sure, but don't assume its lower resolution equals lower noise.

thanks rodman, interesting read.

so the a350 and a300 use the same sized sensor, and in theory more pixels on it has a negative impact on noise.

but the a300 uses the same sensor as the a200, which has negative impact on more pixels compared to other 10mp.

it doesn't really summarise it, but then i guess, they did say until they test the a300 they can't say for sure.

but the two comments above, kind of nets each other out, if there was similar impact on noise.

just read the a300 review.

so i think in conclusion (from what i understand), yes the a350 has a negative impact on noise level due to same sensor size as a300, but the a300, too has negative impact on noise level using the same same sensor as the a100 and a200.

so noise level aside, they both have their negative sides.
next is image quality, which both faired very well. but the 14mp from the a350, uses more memory and is limited from the kit lens, and probably won't see much advantage unless using the likes of dt 16-80.

on this note, i'm now swaying back towards the a300. the main negative of the a300, is that it doesn't produce as good images as other 10mp, such as Nikon D80, but then again it's in a different price bracket and doesn't have live view etc. which is what i want from either a300 and a350.

Hi,

Does the A350 have Depth of field preview???

cheers

Jessops are now doing the a300 with kit lens for 339, less 40 cashback, thats 300 net all in. Cracking deal.

yeah thinking of body only £290 less £40 cash back = £250
save the £50 on the lens kit and spend an extra to get the sony 18-200 instead

I thought the a300 has DOF preview, but its hidden away in the menus? Reading the brochure i downloaded, its classed as "aperture priority" for us n00bs! But does the same thing. Blurs the background.

Also had a play with these cameras yesterday in jessops. Although the canon 450d really does win on all but live view, i just didn't like it when i picked it up. might need to take a second look. The sony however fitted nicely in my hand. And actually felt better quality oddly! Cheaper too! cheapest i can get a 450d for is £371 after rebates and quidco cashback!

The 350 with kit lens was coming out at £350 in jessops after rebates, and the 300 was £300 after rebates. Don't forget, if you want to forgo liveview, the a200 can be had for as little as £210 with kit lens, after rebates. take a look at quidco.com too for cashback deals on e-tailers.

can anyone confirm "aperture priority" for depth of field (to blur the background on these)?
