Yes
Hi all, new to the forum and hoping to utilise your knowledge!

I'm new to photography as a whole but am wishing to purchase a printer with which to create images to frame and put up around my home. I have a basic printer used previously for office documents mainly - an epson stylus R300. I'll be receiving a shiny new camera and wish to upgrade my printer to match.

I've done some research and have come up with the canon ix6550 priced at £149.99 but I don't wish to make a poor choice. Has anyone used this printer and can recommend it or are there alternatives I should be considering around the same price bracket?

Thanks for your time.

its basically a jazzed up office printer with a black and 3 colours for printing photos and a black for doing txt. I'd not expect it to be any better than canons other non photo printers. It will do photos but they are unlikely to be any better than lab prints which work out cheaper in the long run.

Thanks Poah

I'm guessing then your recommendation would be to stick with lab prints rather than consider any printer at all? Maybe printing of photo's beyond a few for the family album should be reserved for professionals?

no not saying that - I got a printer because I wanted prints there and then. sure it costs more but its what I want. If you are likely to only print a few images a month then is it really worth it?

Yes I suppose there's no harm in waiting to see just how often I will want to print from the camera. Whilst I am waiting I'll continue my research. Thanks for your input.

i have an ix6550, prints from it hang nicely in my house which is what I wanted from it

canon pro9000 mk2, stunning A3+ prints, think canon might have a £50 cash back offer on at the moment.

Thanks both. Unfortunately the budget wouldn't extend far beyond £150 so the canon isn't an option.

This may require a thread of it's own, but I'n intrigued as to what seperates a good photo printer from an average office inkjet. Resolution is often the same. I require no extra functions apart from a good quality print though economical would be good.

Just for anyone's interest, Canon have the £50 cash back up to the end of December. The 9000 Mk II is one I am considering. Also Epson have a £60 cash back on some printers till end December
