Hi, I am currently looking to pick up my first dslr, I have narrowed it down to either a canon 400D or the sony A200, I will be going down to jessops this week to get a feel of them both.

I will be using them mainly for photos of the kids, but I also fancy a bit of wildlife/bird photography. So as well as the kit lenses I am looking to pick up a sigma apo dg 70-300(£115) or maybe a canon 50-250 IS lens(£180)?

I am edging towards the canon for slightly better IQ? but I like the sound of the inbuilt IS in the sony!

Both cameras can be had for near enough the same price, but the lenses with the IS for the canon seem a bit more expensive? Lets say if I brought the sigma lens for the canon would I really miss the IS, outdoors at 300mm on a well lit day?

any help or advice would be appreciated!

Cheers

i have a 400d and love it, however i have used the Sony in work and it seems to be good! One thing to note though, although the Sonys can use the old Minolta lenses, there arnt a lot of sony lenses out there. When you look at Canon, they have a much bigger user base, plus loads of lenses from Tamron, Tokia and Sigma

I have a Sony alpha and love it, price was the biggest decider for me, allowing me to spend more on lenses. Personally I don't have a problem finding lenses and accessories for the Sony. I have a Sigma 10-20, the kit 18-70 and sigma 55-200 + 70-300. The ONLY downside so far is the lack of other users to crib advise from. :)

Go for the canon, all the extras will be much cheaper as it is far bigger than sony in the DSLR market
