A Weekend in Northumberland

You've some great footage, but I think you've killed one of the main elements of the video for me, the sound of the woodland. I would have prefered footage without music overlay :)

Nice composition and focus is spot on. I think your footage would benefit from some colour grading, a lot of it looks slightly over exposed, I don't think any of it has clipped so maybe just a slight brightness and contrast tweak would really make it pop.

I also agree about the music, no offence but it sounds like the soundtrack from an adult film.

Thanks for that Will, I too disliked both the volume and the tone of the music.
The woodlandish sounds underneath the music : was that added or was that in some of the audio from the video you took? It sounded fine.
Was the first bird a woodpecker? I've seen only one round here (Haltwhistle) but couldn't get a picture of it.

From this vid I looked at your bit on Countryfile : good stuff.

Yeah, I too think the music was a bad choice in hindsight :P
The bird song you here wasn't recorded at the time, I don't have a good recorder yet. It is an investment I am going to be making though.

Yes it is a great-spotted woodpecker. We have them in our wood. I am just in Haydon Bridge!

Some good shots in there Will.

I'd love to try a wildlife video using a 500mm + 1.4 on a D4 in 2.7x crop and edit in 720p...if my maths are correct that's a 2800mm equivalent. That's getting close to the nose hairs of a squirrel being filmed I'm sure!

Maybe in another 4 years when the prices drop lol.

Seems pretty sharp for D4 footage. Nice work. Are all the soft D4 video rumors nonsense then? (partly why I went the D800 route!)

They're rubbish! Never heard that. I'm very impressed.

It's fantastic in 2.7x crop mode, although crap when not cropped.

That's what I'd heard - that the D4 had softness issues unless shooting on 2.7 crop mode. Sounds like it is true then?
I would say that the D4 is a very poor choice for video use then, if you can only get decent quality in 2.7 crop mode, no?

Not trying to pick :-) It's just I pondered long and hard over my Nikon upgrade (as a D3 user I would have bet my house on me getting a D4), but as video is a big part of my work now, the D4 softness reports really put me off and I ended up going the D800 route instead.

Same with most dslr I think. Something to do with pixel ratios. Shooting low mp on a 16mp sensor

That's what confused me though. The d800 has twice the pixel count more or less of the d4, so you'd think the extra down sampling etc would make the situation worse on the d800. I leave this sort of thing to geeks and boffins to figure out....

I think the D4 is considerably worse than any other full HD DSLR on the market......ever. That's saying something.

Of course I'm only going from tests and youtube / vimeo comparisons but yeah...definitely soft wouldn't like to own one for that reason. Poor show from Nikon I think - I was really dissapointed of them to have come out with this kind if result from their top of the range camera.

Hey stop dissing my wallet breaker Phil :P
Nah, it's primarily for stills for me. The 2.7x cropped video is very very good though.
And I read cameramen for tv were looking at them to film with now.

Haha! The 2.7x crop mode is an amazing achievement and will be applauded by cameramen alike. But you're stuffed if you want a good wide shot lol.

Is there a FF lens that isn't fisheye to give a wide shot (28mm effective) in 2.7x crop??

For me personally, the extra reach would outweigh the lack of wide coverage...but it's a very expensive kit that really, should have given a better quality.

Sorry I'm dissin' again! :p

I use my GoPro for the wide stuff ;)

Plus my 14mm gives me 37.8mm on full frame.
