A while ago i was looking for a prime lens for my d40 and ended up with a nifty 50 which is a great lens but im really bad at manual focusing.

It seems the only prime lens with auto focus for a d40 is the sigma 30mm hsm thingy but my thought was should i buy myself a second hand d70 body as that would work out cheaper?

so really just looking for opinions on the d70 and how it stacks up against the d40 similar image quality ease of use etc?

any comments would be great thanx

D70 and D40 use the same sensor IIRC so should compare quite well. The D70s being a slightly updated version (slightly larger monitor) of the D70 both have the SB-Commander built into the flash so you can use an SB600 or SB800 wirelessly and I think it has 5 rather than 3 focus points. The D70 & D70s have a pentaprism rather than pentamirror (as on the D40) so the viewfinder should be brighter. The D70 and D70s are also widely used for Infrared photography as they have a weaker builtin IR filter over the sensor than most common cameras. However one thing baring in mind is that the D70 and D70s take Compact Flash cards rather than SDs. Definately worth considering IMO.

Alternatively try looking for a S/H lightly used D80 (uses SDs), you should be able to get one for under £400.

I have the D70s - and it is an absolutely cracking camera for today's prices!!

And - there are a couple for sale on this very forum.

Hope that helps.
