It occurred to me today that in a potential future conflict modern cameras would probably not survive an EMP, and that the only way you could document it would be with a film camera that is completely manual.

Well. That's something I hadn't thought about but if the world goes bang the local chemist might be shut so where are we going to get film developed? Before I was an amateur photographer I used to draw so I'd go back to that and document the apocalypse with pencil and paper.

A while ago I got a bit pessimistic about the war in Ukraine and decided to buy a wind up radio just in case the world went bang. I bought one off Amazon and it came all the way from China and it was a total pile of poop. It wouldn't pick a thing up whilst my old Roberts little tranny picked up everything I could think of. At times I do get a bit angry and frustrated that so much on sale these days is tat.

I don't know why it came to me really. But, assuming you had those rolls of film you could theoretically still be out looking for post apocalypse compositions. Although, unless you had a good supply of chemicals, and could develop them yourself, you would have to store the rolls for future generations to find. Like a sort of time capsule. I think I may have accidentally hit on an idea for an art house film. :D

One movie I'd recommend which involves photography is a French movie called "The big picture." Deffo worth a watch.

Back on topic. I'd be gutted if I didn't have photography to comfort me whilst waiting to die of radiation poisoning but another thing is our pictures... most of mine are on the pc and backup disks and not printed. I guess I should print more so I'd have the comfort of seeing my world as it was before the end.

Anyway. Maybe we can avoid a lot by keeping kit in Faraday bags.

I'm going to have to Google that now. :D But you'd still have to charge your batteries somehow.

You could have rechargeable batteries and a wind up charging device. It'd take a lot of winding but if the grid was down or if you were just out and about you could I suppose sort of manage and you could use a solar powered charger if nuclear fall out wasn't blocking the sun.

I feel better about things now :D

I wouldn't hold out much hope of posting the pictures here though. :p

If the world goes (EMP) bang, the tranny will work just as well as your laptop. And that'll be the least of your problems!!!

I shall be too busy putting me head between my legs and kissing my arse goodbye to worry about taking pictures :D

All this planning for post apocalypse survival seems to be just extending the agonies. I wanna go out in the first blaze of gory (sic)!

Putting head between my knees? Ain't gonna happen (and if it did, I wouldn't be able to get it back up!!!)

You wouldn't have to worry about that either :D

True!

Anything with a transistor or diode would be killed straight away, so we would have no electric, no water and no communication ,no motorized transport ( unless it's super old) ( for the young people on here that means no Facebook , Instagram or snap chat) It is said the military have mothballed valve equipment which would still work. As a side line a number of years back when I was in a caving club ( one of the members was really interested in the cold war bunkers and had illegally visited and photographed a lot of them for his website) We went into Wiltshire to visit Box stone mines and to visit a long under ground train line which was used to store and load trains with ammunition , one train an empty one would go in and perfectly timed the full one would come out ( the entrance was made to look like an old barn in the middle of nowhere) Anyway we did all this and as we had time left we attempted to get into another fairly local tunnel where we were told there was a steam engines covered in thick grease for use should there be a nuclear attack. This tunnel was in the middle of nowhere but as soon as we entered MP's were in front of us and told us if we did not leave immediately we would be arrested. Because of this I cannot confirm if there were old trains there or not but it does seem odd that there we MP's there ! You could also build a Faraday cage (Very simple) and put all your electronics in that. I'm a bit sad but have done some experimenting with them and radio at fairly high powers)

Two books spring to mind - The Second Sleep and Station Eleven. Both are set in a future world where we go back to basics.

Id be more concerned about the kebab shop closing during a post apocalyptic melt down, I have an old Land Rover, an acoustic guitar and some feuerhand oil lamps so I'm pretty sorted with transport, music and light , I have a few tins of beans but if the kebab shop closed, I mean, what then?
