A Sigma 18-200, or separate 18-70/70-200?

I'm looking to buy a couple of new lenses soon. I was thinking of buying the standard Nikon DX 18-70 (D70 kit lens), and then later a 70-200. But then I saw that Sigma do an 18-200 for a similar price to the Nikon DX 18-70.

My only concern is that the Sigma will be a compromise, and that images won't come out quite as well as if I used separate lenses - is this true? Until now my every day lens is an 18-55, so I'd probably get on ok with an 18-70 for the time being.

Any advice appreciated!

Ian.

Absolutely - the 18-200mm would be a BIG compromise!

The Nikon 18-200mm VR is supposedly quite good, but still no match for a combo of 18-70 and 70-200mm

I actually have experience of BOTH lenses! I bought the Sigma while waiting for the Nikon VR (which even now there are still supply issues around)
As -Oy- says the compromise is too great - the Sigma is decent enough for the money as long as your expectations aren't too high - the Nikon VR is better as you'd expect for more than double the price - If you wanted a "one lens" solution then it fulfills this quite well but IMHO you still compromise quality at the wide & long ends of its range (I really missed the 200-300 range btw) - I sold mine and went back to a three lens setup (wide angle mid zoom long zoom)

:agree:

I have the sigma 18-200, but looking to replace it sometime in the future.

In the right conditions it can be a good compromise lens, but in low light it can be frustrating.

Go seperates, or you'll be dissappointed.

Thanks for the advice guys - I think that's made my mind up!!
