Hi everyone. I was just wondering if anyone (and i know there are bound to be hundreds) goes off road cycling with their cameras. i prefer to go off the beaten track and just wondered if all camera backpacks give equally good protection against the lumps and bumps as i have just bought a 500D and would hate to naff it up on the 1st trip out !!

When I go cycling (off and on road) and motorbiking, I use a Lowepro Slingshot 200AW, which I find perfect for keeping my kit on my back & out of harms way when riding, but then, due to a design which allows you to swing the bag's compartment around to the front of you without having to remove it, gives me access to my kit when I want to stop and take a piccy! Have a look here to see what I mean: http://www.lowepro.com/slingshot

Welcome to TP btw

Check out this thread

Whatever you do, don't carry your gear on your bike! Some sort of well-padded rucksack would be preferable, if only because your body acts as a shock-absorber.

I carry my kit everywhere on one or other of my bikes, and it's all in tip-top nick. Of course the bag has to be padded, and I tend to find the shock absorbers on my bikes work well as shock absorbers!

EDIT: Ok, maybe not on red- or black-grade mountain bike trails, but then that would be silly :D

thanks guys. i was originally after a shoulder bag, but after having a wander down my local canal today i realised i would be out on the bike again soon etc, and having just gone for a bag that was sold out i think the slingshot will be my way forward.

cheers !!

Of course there's a limit to how much bouncing about you should subject your kit to, but that's obvious really. And if you're talking about cycling down canal paths etc, the Slingshot range make an excellent choice; I got one specifically so I could ride around finding the little nooks and crannies of London to photograph; up and down Hampstead Heath, along river and canal paths, etc., and the bag works a treat

just taken delivery of the slingshot 200 aw. more than happy with it and dont worry Nifkin....... i have no intention of flying down a mountain lol. Thanks again guys, cant wait to take it out for a spin !!!

I've been thinking about making some kind of padded box to fit on the rear rack of my bike. I don't do much off road riding though.

What is that foam stuff you find in pro cases called? The one with the peaks and hollows of foam that is black in colour?

from what i can see its just called camera case foam. lots on ebay. and jessops seem to have the dimpled stuff.
