I have just started off in photography and have bought a used camera and 2 lenses, i would like to ask if you dont mind will a flash gun be essential my camera is a Canon 400D:)

Not essential but as you gain experience it will open up new areas of photography.

Check out the 'Talk Basics' part of the forum (where I suspect this thread will be moved shortly) for lots of great advice on starting out.

It very much depends on what you want to shoot and the apertures of the lenses you have.

For example, if you want to shoot landscapes then you can't really light up the side of a mountain with a flash so, nope, not necessary.

If you want to shoot a newborn baby, then placing the subject near to some window light is a good option and the addition of a reflector may be all that is required so again you can do without flash.

If you want to shoot indoors on a day like today then darned right you are going to need one! It's as dark as a very dark thing in darksville.

So it depends on the subject and how you want to treat it photographically whether you need one or not. My advice would be to get shooting and if you find you can't manage without one, then you will know you need one :)

Hi,
Your camera has a built in flash as you will have seen.
This is fine for a bit of fill in light when shooting in bright contrasty light. It may give you flat lighting if you use it as your only light though. A lot depends on your subject, you will be able to take good photographs by increasing the ASA and opening the lens as wide as posible. There are a lot of variables to think about.

For somebody who only really shot motorsport I added a speedlight to my kit and wouldn't be with out it. You would be suprised what you could do stuck in the house and bored.

not an absolute necessity at first but to be honest you can get some decent cheap flashguns about and it will prove to be a very worthwhile buy.
