Can you guess what it is? I'll add some teasing images until someone gets it. Made between 1979 and 1983, it comes in a case (cropped to remove any giveaway sense of scale):

That era saw the influx of Polaroid style cameras iirc.
I had a Polaroid as a teenager at the time but I don’t have any recollection of filters being used with them.

Édit: What I do recall vividly however is the cost of the pack of ten instant film..... at almost a tenner , that was basically my weekly pocket money for one shot!!
Fortunately I was helped to finance the use of my new toy.... I remember it went to Malham with me on a school trip.
Happy days.

Not a Polaroid or that style.

You would attach this item to a camera rather than the camera coming with it built-in in this case. It actually came with 5 filters in total, four in this little holder (ugly photoshop hiding name)

The size of the filter is going to lead your thinking in completely the wrong direction

Shot of the exhaust pipe on my bike from about10 feet away.

I'll need to practice using it as it really does have some reach especially on an M4/3 sensor. It'll also get a go on the ME Super and I'll try out those filters.

It is lighter and shorter than I expected and with the tripod mount it just sits ion the hand very easily.

First picture made me turn round and look at mine on the shelf behind me, had it nearly 30 years and mine came with a X2 converter for added camera shake.

Looks like it's sharper than mine!

So those filters sit on the rear element presumably?

What effect does that have on focusing?

Ive never used filters at the rear of a lens but have read comments how some LF togs use the method.
Seems that the focus distance changes( similar effect to that of LF telephoto lenses perhaps ?)

Close up in less than challenging conditions. I'll get down to the park with it and see how the swans, ducks and geese look, I expect that will show the relative sharpness to be similar to yours Peter.

I'm not expecting miracles but to get close to this focal length with a standard M4/3 lens I would need to spend a lot, lot, lot more money. And I still wouldn't get donuts thrown in :sneaky:

I don't know to be honest. It comes with a lens that you keep on there permanently (though it can be removed). I do wonder how bright it would need to be with F8 and the ND4 filter that is in the pack.

I do have a double adapter that fits this lens  :$ 2000mm FFE at F16 anyone?

This little 'duck' was one of the first photos I took with that lens and the Pentax ME I got at the same time. She borrowed the lens to do some shots during her photography degree a few years ago, these days she works in the NHS.

Wonderful! I do hope she still has a passion for the photography as well as the service she provides in the NHS.

So, handheld on a M4/3 sensor is certainly a challenge for someone who does not have a particularly steady pair of hands. The IS makes a huge difference of course, thankfully. Here are a few images from the first run out of the SP500 on my Em1 MkII. Sharp? No! Fun to use to capture scenes that would be well outside the range of my current digital M4/3 lenses? YUP!

Only the swan is cropped (square). Bit of PP on the swan and other bird but none on the goose. JPG's from the camera.
