A little warning....Paypal 'Gift' option...

Please be aware that if you are paying by Paypal gift (or any similar option which avoids paypal fees), you will NOT be able to ask them for help should the deal turn sour, or open a dispute or claim etc.

Just a word of warning. We'd hate to see someone burned because of this :)
 
in total agreement there ... i didnt realise till recently that Gift payments are not covered ... hopefully todays purchase will be fine .. :help:
 
Just to confirm there has been a large number of people on another forum stung by this recently.

I've heard of this and new info from my credit card company says if the item is 2nd hand - they no longer cover you :shrug:
 
Good to know, thanks guys.

I for one use PayPal for convenience rather than safety, is sending as 'gift' any less safe than say; bank transfer or cheque?

Just taking this thread off on a tangent about paypal, if you use paypal, be on the look out for series of fake emails that look like they are from paypal requesting account detail updates. They usually start dear paypal user or customer and have a link at the bottom avoid using the link. Had an email yesterday and deleted it.

This is very similar to the spoof emails requesting you to update your bank account details. They are generally titled 'dear customer' etc!:nono:

Hell, you really have to be on your toes these days with all of the scammers out there! Fortunately there are forums such as Talk Photography and TZ-UK where members develop a level of trust with each other and deals are done in the old fashioned way where generally a persons word is their bond.:thumbs:

I have to admit that I do not understand the Paypal 'thing'. I have often used the Paypal 'gift' when paying for a piece of kit and I have always paid the fees so the recipient gets the full amount. I assumed by the fact that I have paid the fees that the protection remains in place!:thinking:
 
If you use the 'Gift' option, then there shouldn't be any fees at all.

It's the purchase/services options that incur fees (and you will get a chance to pay the fees)

The reason I bring this up is because I've noticed a large increase in people in Classifieds stipulating Paypal Gift as a payment method.
It's only fair that people know what risks they are taking.

If you use the gift option if the payment comes from a confirmed bank account on paypal there is no fees, if you use a credit card you gett the fees but it asks who you want to cover them

if paying fees from a cc to someone its just as easy to use the send a normal payment and this keeps both buyer and seller safe

That's useful info! I always use my credit card on Paypal as I am pretty uneasy making a payment from my current account as I do not fully trust Paypal, even though they do have my current account details. Not logical :thinking:, I know.:bonk:
 
or the buyer payes the etxra 3.4 % fees,

I just paid for 2flashes on here using the GIFT option, didn't know you couldn't do anything about it.
