Morning all,

Just a bit of a disappointed 'rant' so click back if youre not interested!;)

Some of you may have seen I recently was invited to photograph a Burlesque show. Now Ive never done anything of the sort and off I went with my camera and had a lovely time and was quite pleased with my photos ( even with the worst lighting Ive ever come across)

When I got there and was setting up my camera I noticed a man with a gripped camera and a lens the length of my arm, not really thinking much of it as he was sat on one of tables as a paying customer.(or so im guessing?! I wasnt sat down!)

After the show I spoke to the girl running it and we basically came to the agreement that she could use some of my images (for free) on her website then credit me. Well after all the time I took to put on the computer, edit and sort out and upload to my facebook page, email etc I was very disappointed to see shes used the photos from the guy with huge lens on her website.

Whats so disappointing is they all gave my photos really good reviews and really liked them (grain and all:D) but then use someone elses:'(

Should I learn from this and not go anywhere for 'free'?

Sorry for moaning!

Nic

*sigh* they were alot less grainy but Just straight on stage shots, a touch flat (but I do think its personal preference) I suppose mine were more 'arty'.

You can see mine in the nude and glamour section for when youre not at work;)

I was using my Nikon and I swapped between my lenses as I positioned myself in different parts of the room (lenses being my 55-200mm and 18-55mm ) Lighting was 3 60watt bulbs

Unfortunately, they may have gone with the other guys shots as they were cleaner (less noise), as they may have been better to use for future promotional material. Perhaps it was the fact that they werent paying you, they decided it possibly wouldnt matter?

To be honest, although a great little camera, the D3100 isnt the greatest at high ISO's. What ISO and Aperture settings were you using?

Congrats on your 100th post!!

I think youve hit the nail on the head, due to crappy lighting I was in like 800-1600 ISO...oh well. You live and learn.

Thanks for replying anyhoo:thumbs:

at the end of the day it was free, you enjoyed it and it give you some practice and you come away with some nice shots, take it on the chin and not worry if you was losing money then that would be different. as for free stuff things like this can be great for people looking to learn.

Very true. That was the whole idea, I am learning but to be told 'yes we would love to use your images' then not to and use somebody elses is a little disappointing.

Thanks for replying

Well as you say, youve learned a lesson (and enjoyed the night at the same time), so it wasnt a complete waste.

ISO 800 and 1600 really are touch and go quality wise on the D3100. Im not sure of your budget (or if you have a budget for new kit), but it might be worth looking at a little 50mm prime if you are likely to be doing this kind of photography again where you are getting close to the stage. Either an F1.8 or F1.4. You can pick up a 50mm AF-D for less than £100 new, but this wont autofocus on the D3100, so you would need to look at the AF-S versions to get autofocus (apologies you probably already know this) :D

How do you know it was this better endowed tog they used?

Anyway, I've had a look at your flickr (the link in your sig doesn't work by the way) and they look fine to me. I really wouldn't worry about them not being used. Ultimately if you're happy with them and the experience was good - and you weren't going to be paid anyway - then you've lost nothing.

Ah will fix the link thanks for letting me know!

I lost time, and thats enough. I know im learning but my time still costs me as it would anyone else.

Glad you liked my photos too:thumbs:

The trouble is, it wasn't 800 iso, or even 1600, it was 3200 and sorry, but that on a D3100 coupled with cheap glass is never going to produce stunning shots under "crappy lighting".

To be fair, the woman hadn't seen your images when she agreed to use them and she probably said exactly the same thing to the other photographer as well. In the end you've both probably sent your pics in for free and his, being slightly less noisy, are the ones she's chosen to use....
