a little bit of help please

last night i had a fantasic shot in mind ...it was a very still clear night and the full moon was shining off the channel...so i got out my tripod and camera and the bloody thing just wouldnt take a shot in the dark.......get a little light from the street lights or security lights and i could get a shot but not very good....got the d40x so anything you may thing im doing wrong then please let me know..i used 4 different types of lences but still couldnt get the shot i wanted

try shooting ISO 100 A/V F8/11 manual focus infinity tripod cable release

ok i can give that go...il post the pictures i did get once i found a bit of light to help me out but as i say they arnt great
