Today I have learnt a good lesson:

ALWAYS reset your camera when you've finished shooting.

Spent 20 minutes at Whitby today on the seafront wondering why the sky was getting blown out on every 3rd picture I took.

It finally dawned on me that I'd been playing with the auto bracketing features last night and forgot to switch it off.

Mocking welcome, I'm an idiot:bonk:

On the plus side, I'll never do it again, and I haven't lost any shots I would really have wanted to keep, I just took them over again

Been there, still doing that

ISO is another thing I have a habit of leaving on some crazy setting.

im terrible for forgetting to reset camera options, did a whole shoot in jpg the other day cos i forgot to reset to raw after cleaning my sensor:(

I took the first dozen shots at -2/3 exposure today.. duhh

Think we have all been there at some time if we are honest..:bonk:

Same here left the camera on an ISO of 1600 and then went shooting in the moring and found all my pictures were pretty full of noise.

On my 400d if i turn it off it doesn't reset it how do you reset it on the camera

Don't worry we've all done similar at some point. Although I'm surprised DF can remember that far back

My best is going on a shoot and leaving all my memory cards behind. Lesson - NEVER set your camera to "shoot without CF" :bonk:

Oh Yes ! this all sounds so very familiar, being new to photography a camera is like a nasa flight deck to me. my big mistake allways forgetting to charge the damn batteries, oh for a 3 pin plug and a long lead !!!!

To reset the 400D have a look at page 100 of your user manual or, if you can't be bothered with manuals (like me), select the second tools option and then select 'Clear settings'. You'll then be given the option to clear all camera settings or just any custom settings you may have set. It's going to have to be the manual I'm afraid (page 100) to find out exactly what settings are restored to default though.

Thank you for that, and the manual is such a pain (sigh). Anyway i am going to go to the manual now

I wouldn't use the reset settings option after every shoot personally. It resets things that I prefer to keep set.

What theyre referring to above with resetting options, is things like

ISO speed, back down to 100 or 200
Into Av (Aperture priority) mode, and set it to a mid aperture of around f8 or so
Into Tv (Shutter priority) mode, and set it to a rough mid speed of 1/125
Check that your focus mode is set to the one you use most, and that your focus point is set to the right one (if you've been using a side focus point for example).
That sort of thing....

So if need be in an emergency you can just grab your camera and get a usable shot from the off, without much fiddling.

The ISO one I do all the time.... :embarrassed:
