Hi, Complete beginner here I'm afraid. I want to buy a Canon EOS 60D body and a fast 50 lens. Can you recommend a good place to buy on the net ? I don't have the time to do the shops.

Hi Robert. I'd look on ebay, camera price buster, and google.

Camera price buster is a good shout to find where is cheapest, but usually I end up going with Warehouse express anyway.

At the moment the answer would have to be anywhere you can find one. :(

Personally I avoid the cheapest places. I use SRS Microsystems almost exclusively. Their service is tops and their prices are pretty competitive. For example when I got my first 7D it was not right so I gave them a call and they sent me a new one even before I returned the first one.

Id look at ebay. But are you sure you want a 50mm? Very restrictive field of view IMO, better adding kit lens if your a beginner

Amazon are usually competitive and very good for any returns even after a few months, don't forget Jessops too if you have any Tesco vouchers hanging about, tenner for a fivers worth of vouchers

There are places advertising the 60D with the 18-55 kit lens for about £100 more than the body alone. The asking price for the 18-55 is about £190. You could buy it with the lens, sell the lens and probably make a profit.

Hi Robert, I guess you'll also be getting a kit zoom as a fast 50mm alone will be pretty limiting.

Generally I recommend my clients to buy from Uk sites with address and telephone number and orig manu warranty rather than supplier warranty although we often use establishes so-called grey importers like camerabox when price is right.

Over the last year we have used - Digigood on ebay, Camerabox, Ask direct, Purely gadgets, fotosense and Microglobe all with good results, Simply electronics uk (supposedly) were a waste of time. Amazon does sometimes have superb prices.

You need the 50mm f1.4 with 60d really, the 1.8 is very plasticy but, a great performer for it's price.

I would recommend digitalrev and onestop digital.. theyre from hong kong and are imports but the prices and services are awesome!

I'd check with Ian (Kerso) too.

Robert, you may not know about Ian. He gets stock from the USA and supplies from his business address in Scotland, so the goods come with a UK invoice for warranty purposes.

Ian (Kerso) has an ebay shop, but if you contact him via this site by PM, you can avoid his ebay charges and if you pay by BT you can avoid PayPal charges.

......and you get a TP members discount!!

I'd value an 18-55 at a maximum of £50 for a new non-IS and £100 for the IS version. Are you sure you're not confusing it with the 17-85?

An easy mistake to make given the long string of codes to take in and decipher, but they are different lenses because the bundled one shown with the 60D is a MkI and the standalone is the new MkII which was only released in February.

The lowest price on Camera Price Buster for the MkI is £99 and because a retailer is selling it for that, a private seller is going to have to be very lucky to get that.

Ah - OK, my bad. Generally lenses are significantly cheaper when bundled with a body than they are stand alone.

I would recomend Jessops

Theres a sentence I didn't expect to see on TP!

On the basis that he might know what he wants/needs, and a low post count makes you new to TP but says nothing about your photography experience.. why are so many people disputing his stated requirement on nothing more than their own prejudices and preconceived ideas of what a camera kit should include?

There's plenty folk open-minded to primes as walkabout/GP lenses. Admittedly, they're a rare breed amongst the mobility on TP.

To the OP, if you knwo exactly what you want then camera price buster and Kerso should both be checked for prices.

I agree with him. Amazom is usually your best bet, also because if anything is damaged when it's shipped, they will take care of it, where as some other places are very shaky on this. Plus they have great prices.

How fast a 50mm do you want ?

I'd be inclined to buy the camera body only from kerso or digital rev etc then get the 50mm second hand (check out MPB)

a f1.8 will be about 75 notes

a f1.4 will be circa £200

(i'm not sure if theres anything faster than 1.4 available but if there is it'll be expensive)
