ok, so no laser!! :)

I wont be print everyday no, I will be printing photos to sell though. Nothing bigger than A4 but want good crisp quality. Dont know if this matters to each printer but i have a spyder 3 colour thingy for my monitor (just thought i *** mention this incase a certain printer can config to my monitor settings.

The pro ones are quite expensive, i'm looking at the Canon PIXMA IP4600, 4500 & 3600. I've read reviews that the 4600 uses a lot of ink but is good quality.

Using the CIS lets you get more prints out of the ink being used right?

Good start getting your screen calbrated The next thing is to have good printing workflow
You need to know how to make sure you use the right settings and do not end up colour mangment twice like so many do also getting teh right printer profiles for your ink and paper.
I use PermaJat and you get free bespok profiles for the papers.

any canon pixma
the lower ones were nice and had a huge black cart in them
The el cheapo ones had only the large black
mid range, photo black and large black...good alround
the slightly nicer ones photo black and a couple of extra colours
for decent A4 and nothing too pricey, including ink I don't thnk that you can go wrong.

I've just got the Canon IP4600, but I am on windows XP 64 and the CD does seem to run even in safe mode, i've installed the drivers from the CD but cant use the CD so in turn cant calibrate the head alignment which it says to do in the manual, has anyone got this printer with XP 64 who can help.

wow
the canon page for the ip4600 makes no mention of w7, vista or XP 64-bit drivers...
gutting.
have you tried manually installing the 32 bit drivers?

Have you "explored" the cd, if the drivers are on there, you should be able to manually point it to these / manually load them up. Might be worth looking an Canon's web to see if they list a set of drivers ?

Alternatively, cantact Canon and ask them to talk you through the installation / point you to the drivers.

I'm running an iP4500 on XP Pro and have had no problems at all and very pleased with the results, hope you get it sorted quickly and are happy with the end results.

BTW - 7 day shop are a good place for genuine inks for the printer

I've got an Pixma 4500 and it's great for the money, and isn't too bad on ink (especially as you can get chipped 3rd party cartridges now).

You may want to lok at the HiTi 730PS. It is a dye sub , like the Selphy . Price - about £2-300.

I would consider not buying a printer and using the money and cash you save not buying ink cartridges to get prints done professionally.

you can get 6x4 prints for under 10p each and at much higher quality than you can do yourself + you can get bigger sizes at a decent rates.

I have a cheapish cannon printer that I never use, it's cheaper to get someone else to do standard size prints, for larger prints the quality blows away what I could do myself!

worth thinking about.
