Hi everyone :)

In september I'm going to University to do a degree in photography and we have been given a project over the summer. We have to photograph a fleeting moment or a decisive moment I'm just wondering if anyone can give me an insight to what they think a fleeting moment is.

The word fleeting means 'momentary' so I guess a fleeting moment means a 'momentary moment'. Technically all photography is a fleeting moment, unless you are using a video camera.

Regardless of dictionary definitions I think for the purpose of this project you would be looking for the action or event which immediately superceded a particular outcome or state.

As for wanting ideas.... Bad Dani - go earn your degree.... they want YOUR ideas not someone else's, so unless you are gonna get our names put along side yours on the certificate....

Just do your own thing, Dani.
Look for something that interests you, maybe different, unexpected, moving or whatever.
There are a billion, billion moments all there for you to capture before your deadline ends - so get a move on ... few hundred million gone while I've typed this.
Good luck, and remember, you're only starting out - just enjoy it and keep learning / experimenting.

I didnt want peoples ideas and to tell me what to do I just wanted peoples thoughts and there input thats all

Some may disagree but I always find old people are great for these kind of shoots. If there anything like my grandad was then they'll tell you stories of their youth and they almost seem to relive the moment in their face. And they sure know how to tell a good story, I'm sure you could picture a fleeting moment in there somewhere.

Let us know how you get on. I'd like to see the picture just out of interest.

no not really I'm not asking for people to tell me what to photograph, I'm simply asking for some help!!!!!!

Another from the "Do your own Homework" camp I'm afraid. The information blurb has lots of names and sources that you can go away and google - or better still - get hold of a couple of books and actually take the time to read them. HCB in particular would be a great place to start - think theres as many books written about him as frames of film he actually exposed!

HELP  in what area's?

I'd be glad to help, but Im unsure what sort of help youre seeking - perhaps you could be more spesific

Les ;)

A Decisive Moment in time / Fleeting moment
Basically what you are being asked to capture are things like
A kingfisher diving into the water and the beak just touching the water
A dropped Milk bottle at the point of breaking
A Balloon Filled with water popping
A Car crashing just at point of impact
A Kiss
A Match lighting
These could all be called A Decisive Moments in time / Fleeting moment
Hope these ideas help please feel free to PM me if i can help further
Regards
Richard

I would either do something fun like a guy picking nose and looking at his finger (will he eat or flick)

Or something dark. Maybe the back of a woman walking away from a grave stone, tissues in hand, with fresh flowers laying on the grave. Maybe I'm missing the point though. Either way aim for provoking a reaction with your photo.

Looking in the mirror .... and seeing a sex god :)

Fleeting moment is a 'catch all'. It’s so open you could skydive in it. A sneeze, blink, smile, kick etc etc.

As said .... you can make anything a moment. Just go take some photos .... the point I think is they need from you the understanding of the project ... being able to explain your work.

They want to hear posh words .... like camera shake is artistic blur .... and poor DOF is artistic interpretation. Wrong ISO is atmosphere :) One thing we all know how to do is BS .... the photography will come when uni starts hahahaha

Why not take some shots and post them here ... we can then vote if it is or is not a moment and why we think that.

Thats all .... for the moment :)

"the decisive moment, it is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression."

the decisive moment is not something one can anticipate or predict, it's all about being in the right place at the right time- take your camera everywhere- allow your camera to become an 'extension of your eye', so you can get the shot when it comes up

Henri Cartier Bresson is the decisive moment
