I was clearing out the MIL's loft yesterday prior to her having her insulation upgraded. There was all manner of junk up there, 6 suitcases, 3 electric fires, 3 fish tanks, rolls of carpets, wallpaper, Christmas trees/decorations, video recorder, stereo system, radios, hand bags, lamps, and.......... wait for it........... a pair of crutches, snorkel, face mask and flippers

.I will not bore you with the full list
Anyway, among all the junk, was this oblong case, I picked it up and it was a fair weight, as the box was obviously antique I excitedly released the two old fasteners either side expecting to find an old brass instrument due to the weight. On opening I found myself looking at a collection of what I assumed were going to be hand painted magic lantern slides I removed one and to my amazement found I had stumbled across a collection of old photographic slides !.
The images are sandwiched between two glass plates about 85mm sq and sealed around the edges with black card, the first one I looked at was a beach scene and from the dress I realised they must be very old, I looked through them and most had handwritten descriptions and to my amazement some are dated around 1860!!. they are all local scenes from around the Tyneside area including a few portraits of locals and most look like they have been taken professionally, although I don't imagine there would have been many hobbyists in those days.
I love looking at books with old photographs of how life was in those days especially portraits of old local folk that shout character at you and it gave me a good feeling knowing that I was probably looking at images that have never ever been published before!!.
Now the question arises, how do I go about transferring the images to the computer, I am guessing my bog standard Canon will not be good enough.
Forgot to mention, about 50 in total.
