The following is taken from another photography forum. Is the poster right to be outraged or wrong?

In the Feb. 17 & 25 New Yorker, the crossword puzzle clues the entry APERTURE as "Opening in a camera lens." This astounded me. Beyond being unfamiliar with cameras, the puzzle constructor must lack a basic understanding of how lenses work in general.
 
It will have been written by an American that used the Merriam Webster dictionary I imagine.

You'll find it slightly different in the Cambridge, and OED.
 
If it's an even slightly cryptic crossword, I'd say it was a good clue. Even as a non-cryptic clue, it's not bad.
 
Americans don't do cryptic crosswords, so this about par for a straight definition in USA.
