In a little predicament.

I'd like to use Lightroom to archive all of my family photos and snaps (IE Non photography photos).
I have a database set up for this already, and have imported all previous photos no problem.

My folder structure is like this

E:\
E:\Family Photos and Snaps
E:\Family Photos and Snaps\2005
E:\Family Photos and Snaps\2006
E:\Family Photos and Snaps\2007
E:\Family Photos and Snaps\2007\03.31 Wife and kids playing in the park
E:\Family Photos and Snaps\2007\04.01 Playing in the garden

etc etc, so the images from a particular day are in their own folder.

All my older photos are full quality JPEGs.
As I shoot in RAW, In the past, I've simply moved the RAWS to the new folder, converted them to JPEGs with RawShooter, and deleted the RAWS.

Now I'd like to use Lightroom.

I use downloader pro to copy images to a "Downloaded" folder on my HD. and place them in their own dated folder.
I then use Lightroom to import these folders into the database, moving this folder to the "Family Photos and Snaps\2007" folder.

(Hope Im making sense so far).

So at this point, the RAWS are stored properly, in the right folder.

I now need to convert these to JPEGs and delete the RAWs.
I can process them using the develop module, and then export.

Now here is my quandry.

1. There is no option to "Export to the SAME folder".
2. When I've exported the files, I would like to be able to have them automatically recognised by Lightroom. I was hoping the stacking feature would take care of this, but it seems not to.

I've looked into making a custom Export Action in the "Export Actions" folder, but I have no idea how to achieve this.

Hope I'm making sense?

If you are going to delete the RAWS why get lightroom to look for them in family photos.

why dont you import them to start with from cam/card into a dated folder... as raw files.

open that in lightroom develop them and when exporting as a jpg export them to family/friendsas jpgs. delete raws as appropriate from the dated folder they first went into.

make sense?? :D

I never delete the RAWS. As my photoshop skills develop, I often go back to photos from a year or so ago and do a much better job of post processing.

Hi

Inclined to agree, using LR means that I don't usually need to convert at all as I can adjust, and print from the raw file. The only time I need to convert is for extra work in CS2 or for the web.

Unless you actually short of HD space or shoot allot, then there is actually no reason to delete raw files in lightroom. Just make the adjustments you want and view them that way. If you viewing the photos in lightroom, then there is no difference in viewing them as Raw or jpeg (speed wise at least on my computer). Just don't tick the auto write XMP function as this can slow you down somewhat.

I did toy with the idea of keeping them in RAW's....BUT.

I like to have them quick and easily browsable, and with RAW's this isn't as easy (need to fire up the software etc). I suppose I could, even though this would mean more space. I tend to take alot of family photos (Got about 6k in there so far).

TBH Though I don't intend for these to be great pictures, more just keepsakes and memories (technically replacing the family 'point and shoot 35mm'), so the photos will probably never need to be reprocessed. I don't even print them out.

Well do what I said Marcel.... download them to a new folder dated, process them as RAW files in the NEW folder .... then at export time...export as a jpg to your family kids/swings folder for example.

Then delete the RAW.

Yup, I think that's the way I'm going to have to do it. Which is pretty much how I do it now in a straight raw processor. I process them from the downloaded, dated folder and then move them into the family snaps folders as jpegs when processed.

But then I have to reimport into Lightroom, which was the problem in the first place...hehe

Pah, clever Adobe people...haven't thought of *everything* have they? :p
