Every device we have at home is connected wirelessly to the internet and the the usual speed is between 120 and 148Mbps depending where the device is at the time.. Recently it appeared slow so we tested the speed a few times over a number of days and it came out at around 60-75Mbps.

After separately testing each device to confirm the problem was in the delivery of the wireless signal and not in any of the devices I was about to contact BT.

Then I got a text from BT. It said they had noticed we had tested the speed a few times. They tested the connection and said to the hub the speed was 145Mbps but also said they needed to refresh the hub and if I texted 'Refresh' they would do it.

A few minutes after I had texted the internet went off and returned after about 10 mins and then the connection to all devices was back up to the original speed.

Very impressed - well done BT.

Of course, the alternative view is that they have a known problem with their hubs, which causes the wireless speed to degrade and requires a reboot to resolve - so someone has set up a simple script to detect multiple speed tests in a limited period, and send an automated text as a result.

I have just left BT, as they were unable to offer me a package that included the speeds I wanted, without a mass of bundled 'free extras' that were of no benefit but pushed the price significantly higher than alternatives.
Time will tell if VM are any better when I get to renewals time!

FYI Chances are you are still with them just under a different brand name. They own EE and plusnet outright. Most of the others still lease BT infrastructure.

Completely separate network with VM - we don't have FTTP here yet, so all the Opereach supplied providers maxed out at ~80Mbs, which I would have been happy to stay with, but VM were able to offer ~500Mbs for a similar price (and ~40Mbs up, compared to ~20Mbs) AND provide an overall cost reduction.
