Hi All,

Im having some major issues with weeds growing in my front and back garden, and no matter what I do, they always come back

Im not a very green fingered person :nono:

Our front garden has puple slate chippings on it, with some weed fabric protector stuff underneath, but they have managed to grow through.

Im in the process of doing the back garden, done a patio and decking and putting some turf down when I have time, but the weeds still keep coming back in the mean time... Over a week or so they go crazy to a couple of foot tall

Does anyone know of anything that could prevent this? When we bought the house the garden was majorly over grown which has now been cleared. We have tried loads of different weed killers etc. Ive been advised Limesalt, but I cant find it

Cheers

Adam

Going by your description of them "growing a couple of feet in a week" and how they managed to grow through anything, it does sound like you have the dreaded Japanese Knotweed. They are an absolute devil to get rid of, especially since their roots can go down a metre underground so you could never truly be rid of the plant. They are often associated with waste grounds and long since neglected gardens.
But near my area was a huge cluster of knotweed but a few years ago the council had managed to shift all that and is mostly grassy stuff in it's place, so I'd like to know how on Earth they managed that.
Google up "How to get rid of Japanese Knotweed" and it might give you a few pointers.

But that is me assuming you have that weed in the first place. :)

If the garden was well overgrown to start with, all those weed seeds will remain in the soil. Keep hoeing and in about 5 years you will have got rid of them ! ;)
You need to catch them small, before they, in turn, seed.

The weeds shouldn't be coming through the matting though, maybe these are seeds that have blown into the surface topping ?

Its time for chemical warfare

Some sort of persistent, systemic weedkiller - "roundup" and splash it all over.

Oddly enough I was once told that Deisel is a great weed killer, as long as you don't want anything to grow there again.

I think Roundup will degrade after a certain amount of time, its not quite as bad as HL or VX :D

Try and find some Atrizine, you'll shift them for good. One of the main compounds in weed killers but banned for direct sale in Europe. Still used world wide.

I work with a guy who still has a small (1litter) in his garage he refuses to get rid of incase any weeds come back in his garden.

ha ha... and yes the garden centre version is a bit tame compared to the agricultural version..

Failing that paraquat or agent orange...

my brother did sugest petrol and a match... bit drastic I think

Cheers guys, hoping is not knotweed (wierd to say)

Funny that - my bro-in-law used old engine oil under his patio. Certainly didn't get any weeds.........somewhat drastic though :cuckoo:

Personally found Weedol to work quite well - but the b****rs come back unless you use a good heavy plastic membrane underneath patios/gravel etc

"oil polution" is almost certainly an environmental offence, with financial penalties...

Just saying...

Correct. Round Up can even be used along waterways. Strange that a product that will kill (nearly) any green plant can be used in this way.

The Environment Agency would be doing cart-wheels if they found out about this act.

Japanese Knotweed can only be disposed of as "Controlled Waste." You are not supposed to just stick it in the wheelie bin.

Certainly is now - back in the 80's......meh. I personally didn't agree with it, but then I'd still use creosote on my fence now if I could get it - and not the watered down eco version - so what do I know?

My neighbour when living in France - only a couple of years ago, used to have a concoction that would kill anything.........except the weeds, which would come back again the next year:bang:

I do mine like this, although the neighbours frown on my 'gardening'.... :)

A few photos of these superweeds might help in getting better ideas.

Its either one of these:

(In which case you need an airstrike from a F4 to deal with it if memory serves me right)

Or one of these I rekon:

:D

Trouble is that all the weedkillers available to the public now have been reduced in strength to the point where they do not eradicate the problem. Even sodium chlorate has a short lived effect.
