Hi all,
i just signed up to instagram as a lot of the bike racers i like use it, but also i think its a good way to get my photos out there a bit more, as i don't have much luck with my Facebook page, but some of the pictures I've seen on there are deferentially not from a mobile, so the question is how do you upload photos from a DSLR camera to Instagram? I did a quick google search and found a web site that upload it to instagam but wondered how they do it and what happens to the image when you upload it? Do they keep a copy?
would be great full for any help.
cheers colin

I'm not sure about doing it on iOS devices but on Android you just copy the jpeg file to your device through whatever means you like - USB, e-mail, cloud storage service, etcetera.

The whole point of Instagram is that it's phone pictures. A lot of people "cheat" and put DSLR pictures up but it's not playing cricket really. If you must do it, upload them to Flickr or some such then re download them to your mobile and then upload them to Instagram.

thanks to both of you i've found a very long winded way to do it, but i see your point it just seems hard to get my photos out for the world to see :( oh well keep on plugging away at it.
cheers colin

I'll post process in Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop and then email or iMessage the photo to myself and then download it from my phone. If you're not keen on the 1:1 square format and want more of your image in the frame then you can download an app called Instasize which adds a border and decreases the size of the image, then you can upload to Instagram.

Hope that helps!

Instragram was at first phone only photos but there has been a recent surge in photographers using it, I've heard several pros use it.

Currently I use Dropbox to stored and view photos before putting them on flickr. Using Dropbox I save the photo to my iPhone, then upload from my phone to instragram using the instragram app. An easy process but a pain it has to be through a phone. I'm planning on varying between phone and DSLR photos. Phone photos are going to back of camera shots or taken to show photography trips I go on, a bit like a behind the scenes updates.

Just use Dropbox, or a similar service. Upload the photo from your computer, select Dropbox as the source in Instagram on your phone, job done. No need to download and save the file to your phone, or email or anything like that.

There are plenty of apps to make squares without cropping, but if you're uploading from your computer, just do it in Photoshop or whatever. Add a white border, easy, and much better quality than most of the free apps, which compress the crap out of it.

That hasn't been the case since about the second day after Instagram was launched.
