My missus has just said that she might buy me a new speedlight for xmas..

I already have a cheapie yn 460 which I use off camera ( I have been told it might not be a good idea to use it on the hotshoe of my d90,d40 and d700 in the near future incase it damages my camera, any ideas on this ??? )

but what I am after will be some thing that I can use both on and off camera ttl and manual and will probably want it for outside portrait stuff, so it will have to be powerfull enough to be used with a softbox / brolly etc.. any recomendations please.. oh and I recon she will go up to a couple of hundred quid..any ideas ???

cheers, steve.

might be a bit pricey but might mean some 900's going cheap very soon ?

Dunno. When the SB900 came out, prices of SB800s went up.

Get the most expensive Nikon flash gun you can afford. They really are jolly good.

Funnily enough thats the one that I was looking at last night, I recon she will go to that..from what I read it looks a good-un..

If you can push her to £250 the SB700 is what you want.

I have also just been looking at a Nissin Di822 Mark II, does anyone know anything about them, ie: reliable, good, bad etc.

Steve

SB700 is good, very good, but personally the SB800 is better for my shooting. However, as an intelligent on-camera (or CLS) flashgun it really does tick all the boxes. The clip-on diffuser and gels are a good idea and the remote mode is pretty easy to set too. It's a shame though that Nikon decided against fitting it with a 5th battery compartment for faster recycling.....
