A bit of advice with filters

Im going to buy a Cokin ND kit and adaptor to fit the 5d Mk2s standard 24-105mm lens. Id also like to incorporate a circular polarizing filter. Should I assume a screw on filter will be sufficient for this? Ive seen filters which are rotatable, does a screw on filter have the same effect by just loosening and rotating it? I assumed also there would be a filter to fit the Cokin kit, but this wouldn't be rotatable individually, which would be an issue with an ND grad? Thanks.
 
You could also look at the Hitech 100 system, the holders are available with a circular mount in front of the square filters.

Rotating the polarising filter independently of the square filter holder could be a problem with the Cokin holder (technically possible, but difficult to control practically), not an issue with a ND filter but would be a limitation using ND-grad filters.
 
Have to say go with the Hitech or Lee filter system as I'm not sure how you'll attach the CPL AND the filter kit simultaneously (my CPL doesn't have a thread you could hang the filter kit off for example). Whilst a 105mm circular polariser is very expensive, you'll only need to buy it once for all your lenses...

If you are going down the route of filters for a 5D2, I think you'll need 100mm filters and a W/A adapter ring. I'm pretty sure the 85mm ones will vignette by the time you have the holder in place.
 
Yep, they vignette around 24mm. I had this size on my 7D and 17-40 combo but no good on the wider angle ff.

The thing that put me off the Cokin when I was looking at it was I wasn't convinced the adapter ring is like the (more expensive) Lee wide angle adapter ring in that it holds the filter set flush with the rim of the lens rather than in front of it. It's not easy to explain, but take a look at page 15 of the Lee filters product literature available here: http://www.leefilters.com/camera/downloads/ref:T47BEF7420802B/ Looking at that, and looking at the pictures of the Cokin I could find, it looked like the Cokin adapter ring is like the Lee standard adapter ring.

Also with the Cokin, it isn't apparent how you'd add a (very expensive it must be said) CPL should you want that too whilst also have something like a grad in there.

Yes, I know that takes a filter holder system from £67 (Z-pro) to £95 (Lee inc a wide angle ring) at WEX prices, but I figured I'd be future proof with the Lee system over the Cokin. And you only need to buy it once and you can put whatever filters you like from Lee/Hitech/Cokin in it after....
 
P-type system holders (Cokin etc) accept a round polariser in a special mount with (very sharp!) serated edges, and it slots in like a normal filter and rotates.

P-system is crude and not very nice to use, but it does work. Beware vignetting around 24mm on full frame, 15-16mm on a cropper.
