Hi,

I recently have joined a pets forum and I posted a few photo's of our dog.
The chap who runs the forum sent me a PM and asked if I would send him the 'originals' without the 'logo', meaning my copyright watermark.

I had a butchers at his web site
www.dailypets.co.uk

It seems all the images on there are copyrighted by www.dailypets.co.uk and there is no credit to the author/owner of the image.

Before I make a complete tit out of myself and tell him no way jose, I just thought I'd get your opinions before I do. I don't want to come across a stingy arse but I don't really like to give anything out for free, especially without a copyright credit.

I'd be grateful to hear what you folks have to say.

All the best
T.

Site looks more like a personal blog site than anything he can make serious money from. Choice is up to you. If it were me I would say thanks but unless I get mention including website / name then it's a no way jose..

Blimey your up early wingnut, I'm two hours ahead of you and I thought I was up early!

Thanks for your thoughts, my sentiments exactly, I just wanted to get other folks opinions before I go ahead and say 'computer says no'.

Thanks mate

It sort of assumes the pictures are taken by the owners who may or may not get a mention, some may not have wanted it. They are small low res images and they get a watermark of sorts with the sites logo, so really up to you. Have to say, no one else has specifically asked for a credit so you might look a bit of plank in doing so for what readers of that kind of blog would consider a snap of a pet, but on the otherhand, they are your pictures and your dog, why the hell shouldn't you!

Sorry, that doesn't really help does it :shake:

Haha, it's precisley what I was thinking too so it indeed does help so thanks!

I'm not bothered about a credit really, just someone making a buck or two at my expense. They are indeed just snaps of pets, hmmmm...

Why not ask for a mention? After all, YOU took them, their YOUR pets, so why shouldn't YOUR name get mentioned, even if it is 'just' a pet website.

I needed a little help and luck would have it, 'The Early Bird Brigade' comes to my rescue! I love mornings me.

Thanks little man! i think I will mail this chap back and say no thanks. I don't want to demand a credit/mention or that my copyright watermark has to be displayed, I think I'll just say no ta.

Interesting thread.

We run a dog website (for Airedale Terriers) and we have had lots of photos either posted in our forums or sent to us to add to the website. The photos are normally just snaps and we would never re-use or sell these images.

We have never credited the photographer ~ it would make the website messy. No one has ever asked to be credited.

We have had photos stolen before (including by ITV :shake: ) and so have a copyright notice stating the images cannot be use without either our, or the original photographer's permission.

Our photos.

To be fair to DailyPets, the website does clearly state at the top of every page 'funny pet pictures......contributed by you' even if it doesn't state where each and every photo comes from. It also says:

As a visitor of Daily pets, you can contribute by sending in your own funny pet pictures and stories for our viewers or you can comment on existing pet pictures and stories by using the comment link under each post.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. If you say no or ask for a credit, he might think you are being a bit precious (I would if anyone sent in photos to me, and also asked to be credited for them). Just send him a low res image and enjoy being part of the website/blog.

Thanks Jumbo, It is indeed interesting, maybe I wasn't too clear earlier as the gentleman specificially asked for an 'original' or full size image without the 'logo', maybe paranoia but he did avoid calling it a copyright or watermark.
I'm not worried if the chap thinks I'm being precious about my photo's, the truth is I'm not precious of snaps at all, it's just deserved caution when being asked for something for free under these particular circumstances.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not making any accusations to the guy or Dailypets, I just don't feel right about it.

In my opinion there's no hassle or exra effort in placing a credit underneath an image so why avoid it? It really makes my tin foil hat tingle :suspect:
Thanks for replying

Ah right. That is different..................

I suspect he wants the shots without logos so he can keep everything looking neat on his site and that's probably why he wants the full size version so he can scale down to the right size and keep the best quality. If you're not happy about sending a full size version say so but offer one sized to the format of his pages, 460px wide, instead - assuming you're happy to supply the photos.

If he still asks for full size ask why he needs them.

Ok thanks guys, I mailed the gentleman back and politely declined as I didn't feel comfortable providing images without a copyright watermark.

I left it it that really.
I may have been a little cautious but something just didn't feel right with it. There's plenty of blogs/sites out there that all display a 'all images are copyright their various creators' statement, as this was absent I chose to be reserved, all in the most amicable of ways of course ;)

Thank you all so much for offering your opinions and thoughts.
