Am in need of a 95mm clear lens filter. Apart from the Sigma one from Wex or Amazon, can anyone suggest anything a bit cheaper please and where to buy it from? Need to be clear glass and not UV. Must be in stock.

Thanks.

Need to be clear glass and not UV

Can ask why? i.e. why not UV?

I use a NISI MC UV 95mm which isn't the best but I haven't really found a really good cheap 95mm filter. Perhaps one doesn't exist and that sigma is really worth the premium.

IMO and FWIW

Don't buy cheap filters/protection glass for your lenses.

If you do want to put such on a lens buy a decent quality one, that should ensure that it is indeed 'clear' (will not introduce colour cast) and be optically flat and likely coated to minimise risk of internal reflections.

Granted a 95mm filter will not come cheap but why possibly spoil the optical quality of your lens by sticking cheap glass on the front.

In my experience UV filters give a pink colour cast. I want a filter to protect the lens having just bought a Sigma 150-600 from a fellow forum member. Cheapest I can find the sigma filter is £73 With free shipping. Maybe someone on here has a good quality filter in mint optical condition they no longer want and are happy to sell?

There seem to be plenty of 95mm clear filters more expensive than the Sigma, but nothing cheaper. lots of 95mm UV filters that are cheaper.....but not what I want.

fair enough, can't say I have found a huge lot of difference with UV or clear filter.
I mostly don't use them while shooting and when I do can't say I have noticed enough colour cast to worry about it.

Perhaps put a request in the wanted section :)
I'd sell you mine but its a UV filter unfortunately.

Personally I would never put a filter on my 150-600mm sport. Heat haze and suchlike is bad enough at 600mm when shooting at long distances without putting more glass in the way. I recently watched a Youtube video where someone was having a problem with the Sony 200-600mm, he sent it to Sony and it came back with a clean bill of health but when he tried it the lens was just as bad.

Obviously he didn't send the filter he was using with the lens to Sony so he tiried it without and there was the problem.

yep filter totally kills the sharpness on my 200-600mm too. Even more apparent on a high res body like A7RIV

Are you sure it is a UV filter that gives you a cast? UV filters are effectively clear glass whereas Skylight filters often have faint orange/pink cast. Read this: NickCarver to explain the difference.

That is a seriously good article. Think I may have suffered with Skylight filters in the past. Am now going to dig out some old kit and check......thanks.

Well if you are going to consider UV filters I'd sell you mine :)
If you like I can post side by side pictures of with and without the filter.

Yes please do so and PM me with the filter details.

Having looked in my box of old photo stuff it was indeed a Skylight filter that I had used in the past......

Why not consider just keeping the lens hood on Andrew - I do this with my long lenses and I have 3 of them

Les :)

That explains it, skylight filters are indeed different and I wouldn't use them.

I will post a comparison later today in the afternoon :)

I find the hood just makes things longer and more likely to clonk something with, I have a filter on all my lenses and would rather scratch that than the end element.....

Of the 40 or so old UV type filters I have around less than half have a pink cast, it's most noticeable on those labelled skylight rather than UV, but they're much the same thing really, skylight just blocking a little more. Changing WB can solve any issues from the colour cast but I'd rather not bother...
On a long lens like a 500mm even moderately good filters will show issues. I won't use one on my 150-500.
