Hey guys,

Ive taken a panoramic interior shot for a client and they have now asked for it to be printed onto an advertisment banner 8 foot by 3 foot.

the photo i have taken is 9798x2598 pixels in full high quality jpeg from my d300 ( 12.1mp ) lowest iso setting. and is 19mb in size saved at 300dpi.

would this print to this size without getting too pixelated? its for a banner possibly to go on the side of a road so doesnt need to be perfect...

if its not big enough can you advise me as to what to do?

many thanks

Matt

I've had prints done on 10ft x 6ft banners, admittedly with text filling quite a bit and the pic looked good. Obviously a little crepe close up, but roadside looks great.

300 dpi on those pixels, means 8 inches on the shortest edge. (2598/300).
dpi only really has a relevance on a printed image. Until you specify the size, the dpi is meaningless.

So, 2598 'dots or pixels' /36" gives an actual pixels per inch of ~72
This means that if it is printed at 300 dots per inch, there will usually be 4 dots the same (very vrey poor explaination, because you would smooth it).
Could you see two lines drawn parallel to each other 1/72nd of an inch apart? I think for normal viewing a 72 pixel per inch print of a poster would be OK.

I produced some files for Anglesey airport a few years ago, they were printed onto plastic and the printer wanted them at actual print size of 8 metres width at 120ppi and the originals were Xpan negatives!!
They looked good, obviously when you looked from a distance of a couple of feet all you could see was dots, dots, dots but from a proper viewing distance for something of that size they looked fine. If you eyeballed any posters on hoardings close up you would see the dots but normally you are a good distance away so you don't.
