had a little rwad in the manual and saw a sigma super dg 530 it read like it would use the canons transmitter to set it off can anyone confirm this (jessops local didnt know as they didnt have one in)

You don't need the Super model to do that - just about any modern flash gun will fire on instruction from the 7D's master pop-up flash function.

I think (better check this) that the Super version will also act as a master unit on cameras that don't have that function built in, ie all Canons except the 7D, and entry level Nikons.
 
What I seemed to think was that the flash could be placed away facing the subject and the 7d's inbuilt transmitter would set it off (i read that the super dg's have an inbuilt reciever) could be totally wrong here though

No, you're right. The point I was making is that almost all modern guns can act as a receiver (slave) and respond to the camera's transmitter (master) instructions. Even really cheap ones.

But I'm pretty sure that the Super version of that flash acts as a master as well, which is why it's more expensive.
 
The 7d built in flash is a full "commander " for the canon flash system. Its not just to trigger it uses ettl too. the "command flash occurs just before the exposure flash and the shutter opening. I use mine to control a 580ex and a 430ex ( takes a bit of getting your head around) but it works flawlessly
 
do any non canon brands work that you know of we11ingon?

have you got an example or two of the shots you have taken just so i can see what result they give

Just about every gun currently on sale works as a remote slave with Canon E-TTL. Most come in three versions, one each for Canon, Nikon and Sony.

Yes, a slave needs a master to trigger it. Your 7D's pop-up flash is a master unit, just make sure the receiver on the slave unit (rotate the red panel on front) can see the camera and so long as you are within range - anywhere indoors is fine - it will fire and the camera will control the exposure automatically using its E-TTL system.

Just get a Canon 430EXII and you can't go wrong.

It's a brilliant bit of kit... I'm still weighing up whether I can get away with buying another one or whether I should send my busted old 430EX back to get the foot repaired (fortunately, it still works in slave mode). ;)
