7D rear LCD image blank

Can anyone offer any advice about my blank rear screen on my Canon 7D.
I turned it on the other day and the screen will not show an image on the rear LCD screeen. You can cycle through the side buttons, info, menu ,etc but nothing I do will make it show an image anymore..
One thing I have noticed is that my battery recharge/performance indicator is down to one red square. Being basically a computer with a lens on the front would this cause the screen to stay blank and so allow the camera to still function with a failing battery?
I can get the menus and mode specifics of the shooting mode that I am currently using but no rear image. I am shooting stills, no video. The camera is about 5 years old with roughly 1000 clicks. I must have recharged the battery 10 times in all the time I have owned the camera.
 
Could try the following:
1. Change the memory card.
2. Do a factory reset.
3. Put fully charged batteries in.
 
It's the composition mode via the lcd screen, not the playback. It would switch to it automatically whenever I turned the camera on. Now it just presents me with a black screen until I press info, menu or the Q button. These function as normal. It does come on if I choose to shoot video via the small button by the viewfinder but I never use it for video.
The battery is fully charged. That is why I asked if there was a known issue with the batteries when the performance indicator gets to one square.
I'll try a factory reset tonight as I don't have the camera with me at the moment.
I only have one memory card.
As a side note do the members on here have any views on non-canon batteries. If I have to purchase a new one, the genuine canon ones are ouit of my price league for hobby shooting. Would a reputable aftermarket one be safe too use?
I have also noticed, doing a quick search, that the LP-E6 has been discontinued by canon. So does that mean I would have to use an aftermarket battery anyway?
 
Try Duracell or Hahnel for aftermarket batteries. I'd avoid unbranded cheap ones as they could be unreliable and possibly a fire hazard.

The LP-E6 was superseded by the LP-E6N and now the LP-E6NH which are higher capacity than the original LP-E6. Its possible that the existing charger may not be able to charge the newer batteries to 100%.

In to 'composition mode' as you call that is (as mentioned by others) called Liveview.

Though I never used LV when I had my 7D many years back I have just looked online and wonder if this video is of assistance as all too easy to move a switch position without realising until too late and causing such a puzzle to the user!

Sounds like you have turned Live View off in the camera menu's.
