Will using a down step adapter cause any issues with the final photos? Vignetting etc? Thanks

Almost certainly it will.....putting a 52mm filter on a lens with a 72mm thread is quite bizarre.

Stepping up.....a 72mm filter on a lens that takes 52mm filters is fine.

As has been posted except....

Depends on your camera... eg if its nikon v1 and you have a normal big lens, the camera should only use the bit in the middle so you might not get vignetting. However, use on a ff camera (d700 for example) then yes it would vignette.

If you have an option of borrowing a filter, I'd try it first to see whether you'd invest in one.

Thanks for the replies. I know it sounds bizarre. But basically my father offered me his older filters which are 52mm, my camera takes 72mm filters. Will give it a try but I did expect those answers. Thanks.

In that case, you will loose a massive amount of the image as it'll create a smaller image circle where the filter is having an effect :)

Assuming they're "full frame" filters, how much it vignettes will depend on what they're fitted too.

I wouldn't advise buying these filters but if they're you're dads they're worth trying as all it'll cost is the price of an adapter, under £3 on ebay.
