So having marvelled at the simple awesomeness of a canon selphy dye sub which a fellow forum user got second hand for about £30, I feel the urge to give it a go.

There's an old but mint Kodak g600 going for £20. Trouble is ink kits seem harder to come by. Anybody tried one or got better ideas? We are talking cheap for a bit of fun first off...

I have a Canon CP780, you should have a look for one of those or the CP800, should easily be under £50 and a 108 photo kit costs about £27. Print quality is very decent.

Just make sure you can get drivers

Yep, the old kodak isn't compatible so i'm leaning towards the cp800 now!

I have a Canon Selphy ...something... that I got for about a tenner in a package with a compact camera.
Really good results with a bit of encouragement, but I just can't bring myself to order replacement cartridge/paper sets at £20+ a time.
It's definitely decent value but I'm totally stingey.

What model? Might take it off your hand if it's gathering dust

Ah no db, it will serve its useful purpose of being a standy 'instant' passport photo maker and home visitor pleaser the minute I get my finger/wallet out and get a cartridge bought.
They really are great for making proper passport photos.

but excellent idea anyway.

Worth a try mate. I think i'm going to pull the trigger on a CP800 in the next half hour unless someones spots something for me :D I'm googling like mad

I got the 810 and use it on site with my MacBook

I have the Older CP710 which I take on holiday to make my own postcards. I get the 108 print packs from 7dayshop and the prints/cards work out at something like 20p each - cheaper than bought postcards! I have the driver loaded onto my XP based netbook, along with PSE2, so I can (and do) add personalised captions to the picture side of the card, my favourite being "Weather is here, wish you were lovely"!!! I forked out for the Canon case for the thing which carries the printer, power supply (and Euro style lead) along with the paper/ink I'll need for the trip - I also keep the chargers for other kit (cameras) in the bag - they share the power lead (figure 8) and it keeps meverything contained. I have a battery for the printer too but it doesn't do that many prints on a single charge so gets left at home. The whole lot goes in the hold baggage - being dye-sub, there's no chance of ink leaking out all over the contents of the case! Even taking into account the original cost of the printer, I reckon it's saved me money as well as allowing me to go from shot to 6x4 print in around a minute (to give to friends, subjects etc).

May also be worth looking on eBay for the HiTi 730.

Calumet second best price on media by pennies and near me - win

Just got the 810 on eBay for £ 33. Thing is I dunno what else I'd need? How easy is it to set up and print wirelessly with a canon 600d? USB lead?

Stick to a USB cable. AFAIK there is no easy way to do wireless with these printers. If the printer you have from ebay is used it might not have paper/ink so you might need that too.

Thank you mike. It's new but I guess will buy new stock anyway. Do you happen to know cheaper place to buy? I read through the thread and looked on that link but had no idea which pack I would need. Would any 6x4 paper work?

I bought my last stock from calumet, only a few pence more expensive than amazon which is the best price for 108x stock and I could pick up from calumet birmingham which is where I live.

Thanks! I know there is a cslumet in London been there once it too far to go again :(. I will check on amazon then. Thx

I like Nod's postcard idea. Hmmm. Thinking.

You have to make sure you get the postcard paper packs - IIRC, Canon do 2 types of paper for the Selphy, straight paper and postcard printed (preprinted with postcard markings on the back). The postcard paper is a little more expensive but is thicker stock and has the markings. Even with the slight extra cost, the cards are cheaper than bought cards (in most places) and you have the satisfaction of sending people your own work!

I find it just as rewarding to take a photo of someone and taking them a 6x4 print later that day. I did once consider doing prints for other people and charging them a small premium to help pay for the printer but decided I'd rather do the odd one or 2 as favours rather than spend 1/2 my holiday working!

No problem! I've still got plenty of the postcard paper but am a little worried that it might vanish from the shelves so was looking for more. VERY nearly hit the add to basket button on the cheaper just paper pack but spotted the wrong part number just in time! The part # for the 108 packs of the Postcard paper is KP-10IP and for the 36 packs, it's KP-36IP.

Amazon link for the 108 pack of postcard is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-KP108...s=officeproduct&ie=UTF8&qid=1352740340&sr=1-3

Jessops aren't that much more expensive http://www.jessops.com/online.store...4-paper-set-108-sheets-kp-108ip-589/show.html Might have to pop in tomorrow and pick up a spare pack!

I have a CP800, great little thing to have around the house for the odd print.

A mate of mine had a baby a few months ago and I got a couple of nice photos of her with mummy and daddy in the ward. Popped back a couple of days later with a couple of mounted photos to keep on the side while she was in, was over the moon.

Also used it a lot back when I was doing a lot of nightclub photography, for selling prints and keyrings on the night.

Good point made by Mike Leslie in that the new CP810 is sold without any ink and paper. You need to buy the pack to even get started.

Thanks. Roughly how many photos does one get from one ink cartridge?

The media for the Selphy printers come in packs of 36 sheets of paper and the ink ribbon cartridges have enough to do the same number of prints, so a pack of 36 will have enough paper and ink for 36 prints.

They also come in packs of 108, one ink cartridge and 108 sheets. Voila. For £27/28

Don't put more than 19 sheets in at a time they say

It arrived today. There's some ink with it so ill do a test print. Thanks very much. The 108 pack sounds better value.

I think it's 18- It's not roughly though. You get the paper and ink for exactly that number.

I have 2 of the Selphy printers but rarely use them now. The good thing about my CP300 I have is that I have a battery so can use it when out and about too.... but it is quite slow to print

To all Selphy users!

Beware of Jessops - I ordered a 108 pack of the postcards and when I went to pick it up, they tried to tell me that the 108IN was the same as the 108IP. It's not! The IP is slightly heavier paper and is preprinted as a postcard on the reverse (which is blank on the IN version)

I ended up ordering 3 of the 36 sheet packs from Premier instead - more expensive buying 3x36 packs but at least they'll be the correct item (the chap I spoke to went into the warehouse to check for me). I've also asked a local retailer to see if they can get hold of the 108 packs and if so to order 2 for me, so I should have plenty of paper/ink for a year or 2!

Of course, you may be happy with the plain paper, especially since it's cheaper than the postcards but I specifically want/need the postcards.

Your print will look the same on both papers, just the P ones are slightly thicker and have a blank postcard printed on the back and the N ones have a feint Canon watermark. It won't matter which you use unless you specifically want the postcard ones to send as postcards.

Just wanted to say thanks to the contributors to this thread - I had no idea these printers were so affordable.

I decided it might be useful to have one for quick prints on occasions such as when family visit, so picked one up (a used Selphy CP520 but incorrectly listed as a CP200) for the princely sum of £12 delivered(!) from "that" auction site. The ink & paper pack arrived today and after a quick test print all looks well.

Very pleased (and quite surprised).

I'm sure that in an earlier post I stated that I use my Selphy for printing postcards to post back from holiday. As you say, the prints will look the same but the thinner ones are less robust and won't take too kindly to the handling the postal services will give them!

Thx everyonr have ordered the 108-in paper set. One more question, How will this work? Everytime i take a photo it prints?
