I'm a little confused on what I should expect from my 60D and 430EXII.

Should I be able to fire the 430EXII when it's off-camera, or do I need a second 430EXII on-camera to activate the off-camera unit?

IIRC you can set off compatible speedlights by using the built in flash (and I think you can fire them with the internal flash closed if it's set up correctly) but I haven't read the manual in a fair while and most of the time I use a E-TTL cord to fire one and set the other off. Have another look in the book and follow the instructions closely. I found it a bit fiddly when I first did it, but once it's set up I saved the settings on my C3 position.

Thanks. I've read and re-read the Manual but have got no real understanding.

Yes you can fire your 430EXII off-camera but your pop-up flash needs to act as the master unit trigger for it, But off-coarse you can have just the 430EXII fire alone but it will send out a pre-flash 1st, or you can set them to work together but remember the pop-up flash has a much lower guide number and is not as powerfull.

I've spent a long, long time trying to sort this out but have failed miserably. Reading the 60D and 430EXII manuals, they seem to be saying that you can only use a flash off-camera if it's acting as a slave to one on-camera.

Anyone care to educate me on where I'm going wrong? Nice easy words, and perhaps a couple of page references, would be appreciated!

Or acting as a slave to the built-in flash.

Make sure your 430ex is in slave mode and on channel 1

On the 60d go to 1. Flash control, 2. Built in flash function setting, 3. Wireless function, 4. Select the middle icon, it looks like a speedlite. Then you should be ready to go....

Hope this helps

It did, thanks!

I followed your instructions and found I then had to hold down the Zoom button on the flash (I assume that's what you meant by putting it into slave mode?). Once I had done that, and got the channel and slave icons showing, it worked with both flashes firing.

Yes, both flashes will fire but if you select the middle option (thats just a speedlite on its own as above) the flash on the camera doesn't contribute to the exposure. It either fires just before the shutter opens or fires on weakest setting (quickest flash time) so it doesn't have any effect. Have a go at each of the three options and fire off some exposures and you will see the diffence!

Thanks for that. I'm getting my head around it!

If I leave the flash and camera settings as I have them now (those suggested by Cheffievrs) will the built in flash work 'as normal' if the Speedlite isn't present? And what happens if I have the Speedlite in the camera's hot shoe?

The 430 cannot be used as a master, only a slave for OCF, however popping it in the hotshot is going to be better than the pop up flash
