Hi,

I'm really hoping this is operator error, as I've just got the camera and have never owned Canon before (coming from Nikon). Feel free to call me a berk who's missed a setting that needs enabling.

I haven't done much experimentation in fully manual mode yet. Considering AP is how I like to shoot, if I can't get it singing in AP that's a big deal to me.

In Priority mode @ ISO100, everything appears overexposed, with light burns all over the place (even in low-ish light). WB is in Auto.

The issue is the same in Auto ISO.

In fully Auto the camera defaults to a very low F setting, so it's difficult to make a fair comparison, but it still appears over-exposed. Generally looks cold and heavy in the blues in any auto mode.

Having owned Nikon DSLRs for over a decade, this is perplexing me. I live in AP mode with the Nikon and have never had an issue like this. I'm really hoping this is my fault and not a hardware issue.

Can anyone suggest any other functions that might be in the wrong setting, considering that the camera's new out of the box?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the lens is stopping down?

Try taking a photo wide open.

This will prove the meter's ok I should think.

Thanks.

Photos appear to be proportionate DOF-wise to the F number - exactly as expected. The problem as I see it is that the shutter is staying open longer than it should for an automatic mode, whether in AP or full auto. I saw this from the first photo I took, but camera was supplied with Auto ISO on. I assumed Auto Iso was a over-zealous, so I switched it off; but even at 100, in AP mode images still have an 'over exposed' look.

I'm optimistic the camera will deliver results fully manual, but it ought to be accurate in AP, so unless I'm making a rookie error (probable), something isn't right.

edit - although I am a rookie and open minded re: operator error, it does strike me as odd that camera doesn't take half decent shots out of the box.

2nd edit - Ignore my comment re: shutter speed. I doubt that is the issue. Photos are cold and hot-spotted, a bit like they would be at high Iso in daylight. Akin to when you take a photo at night, forget to reset Iso and then get a bright shot next morning.

I think we really need to see some examples, with the key metadata. You've given us enough clues to infer that it's probably user error, but we can't work out what type of error until we can see what you've been doing.

as above really-post a shot for us to see. but have you set exposure comp by accident

I guess you've checked the obvious things, like which metering mode you are using and you haven't inadvertently added exposure compensation.
Also maybe check your firmware is up to date.

From your post you speak of priority mode is this the ā€œpā€ mode
