Apologies if this has been asked here or elsewhere but could anyone recommend a decent non-OEM grip for the Canon 5D3 ? I prefer to use bodies ungripped but I think when using larger lenses the grip helps stability so would like one for occasional use.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Watch out for the Hahnel, it appears it is a repackaged Pixel grip and has a reported problem around battery drain.

Personally I would look at the Meike, looks like a different grip and had undergone an update recently

The Pixel Pro grips did have a battery drain problem but it appears to have been sorted now. I had a replacement for mine very quickly from UK Highland Photography on Amazon. It's been used on the camera for about 6 months now without any issues at all.

Cheers for the steer gents. I will look at these options in the morning.

I was looking at the Hahnel one... just wondered about the control functions against the Canon one, are there all the same options & buttons?

I've got a Meike mark 2 version with the joystick on it the same as the Canon one. I got mine off ebay but you can find them here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meike-Versi...-1-fkmr1&keywords=meike+5d+mkiii+battery+grip A very good grip, well made and solid, and it fits the camera very well.

I did have a Pixel grip which worked very well and also has the joystick on it but mine suffered from the battery drain problem. I could have returned it to the manufacturers for a brand new and fixed one but I didn't want to be without a grip for so long.

Here's a pic of the Meike grip attached to my 5D3.

And here's a pic with the Pixel grip attached. I do find the Meike grip a little bit more comfortable to use, but not much.

With the Meike I find the shutter button is very similar to the normal shutter button on the 5D3. There's a easily definable half press/full press whereas with the Pixel grip I found there was less of a definition, it seemed to press too easily and I did find I was jumping the gun on occasions. I hadn't really thought about it till you asked but thinking about it I do notice a difference. I do prefer the Meike grip, I've had them on both my 7D's, 60D, 5D2 and now 5D3 and I've never had any problems with them.
