5D vs 30D (in terms of noise).

Just wondering if anyone could give me a hint of real world experience. I'm thinking of buying a 5d body to replace my 30d, basically on the strength of the IQ, the improved noise handling (inherent with full frame/larger pixels) and the ever falling price of the 5D. I'm not too impressed with 3fps, but I have a fairly steady hand so it should be fine for handheld HDR and anything that I'm likely to need burst for (I don't shoot sport). Oh and I've decided against waiting for the 5D replacement. At that point I'd hope to be buying a second hand ds.

So, how do they compare in the high ISO noise stakes?.

Cheers.

I think for the usage you're suggesting, the noise difference will only be about 1 stops worth....not much more. The larger sensor really comes into its own on longer exposures and way beyond the speeds that you could hand hold.

You will see a benefit in dynamic range and tones though and this aspect may be more beneficial for your specific type of image.

I upgraded to a 5D from a 20D, same sensor as the 30D and the image quality difference was significant. Noise was better but as Bob says the tonal quality was far far superior. Having said that the 20D wasn't bad to start with. Still got it, still use it.

One problem with the 5D though. Once you go Full Frame it's unlikely you'll go back to Cropped frame sensors. Also better start saving for L Glass
