5D vs 1D/1Ds af question.

Living near to the Ribble estuary up north, I'm wanting to develop my photography to now include the coastal/ overwintering birds that are plentiful here - geese/swans and the like - probably on a tripod in a hide.

I'm wondering about my 5D which, af-wise, has been ok for landscapes and portraits with just the odd stutter, but I've found it's not the best performer for action.

I'm wanting to use a newly acquired 100/400 L, not the best for af I know, but it will have to do. I can now invest a bit on a better af body (no, I'm not a banker, but have had a tax refund!!) before the wife spends it.

I'm wondering about the older model 1D and 1Ds's - will these be better - accuracy and speed-wise than my 5D. Which of the several models available below a 1D/ 1Ds mk 3 do you recommend? I don't go above a3 prints - have printed lovely a3's from my 300D when I had one so not looking for massive megapixels.

I'm wanting to capture large birds landing and taking off on water, also the occasional bif pic.

I'm not keen on a 7D, which will have much better af, but for some reason I just prefer pictures from low density sensors - 30D, 5D etc. - so weight notwithstanding am seriously considering one these older pro bodies.

Comments appreciated.

Thanks
Henry

Hi Henry

I can thoroughly recommend the 1dIII in terms of bang-for-buck. The 1dIV is no doubt a better camera but at three times the cost.

Some have had af issues with the 1dIII so make sure you do not get an affected model by buying used online here on TP; should cost aout £1200 for a mint body. I've had 5DI and II bodies and the 1dIII is unbelievably better in af speed and accuracy and burst speed.

Good luck with your choice though.

Thanks, but that's probably more than I can afford - any comments re- the Mk II versions?

Hi Henry

Have tried the 1dsII but not the 1dII versions. That said, I know a pro football photographer who swears by the 1dIIn which is not crushingly expensive. He reckons the af on that is as good as the 1dIII. Cannot substantiate this though.

Gary

I've shot fast paced cycling on the 1d2n, the 1d3 and the 1d4. the 1dmk2n is pretty much identical to the mk3 (obv the mk4 is a whole other league)

The resolution isn't the greatest if you're wanting to heavily crop images but the autofocus on the 1D2 is still fantastic. It's certainly miles ahead of my 40D and 50D.
