Hi chaps, I'm a little confused here, I was just playing around with live view, to familiarise myself more than anything. I have my AF-ON button set (CFn4 to 3 AE lock/metering/ + af start) which I find pretty useful, I use the back button to focus and, if not in manual, the shutter release for exposure ... when live view is active and I press AF-ON something happens, is it the mirror coming up (live view goes black) or is it a 'bulb' exposure ? LV function is on stills and movie mlu is disabled ... forgive me if this is too basic but I've checked the manual and am struggling ... any help welcome ... regards Roger

If it's the same as the 7D then when you press the AF-on button the camera lifts the mirror to use the normal AF sensor to focus.

If you go into the Live View menu you can change this to contrast detect and the camere will not raise the mirror but will take a while - hunting the lens back and forth - to find focus.

7D also has a Face Detect mode which I haven't tried.

HTH

As others have said. Sounds like you've got your 'AF Mode' set to set to 'Quick Mode' rather than 'Live Mode'.

Thank you so much chaps ... really helpful and I'll find some time today to sit quietly and check the settings and read the manual more ! - I'm reasonably good at reading instructions but I must say as comprehensive as the manual is some areas like CF4's AF-ON / shutter butter explanation are a little difficult to understand. So good therefore to get some 'live' assistance. Roger
