Hi all,

My 5D is going in for repair under warranty but I can't decide which to choose from the list of companies Canon have given me the choice of. Has anybody had any dealings with any of the following or better still, can anyone actually recommend any of the following:

A.J.Johnstone, Glasgow
Colchester Camera Repair Service, Colchester
H.Lehmann Ltd, Stoke on Trent
Canon (UK) RCC
Fixation, London

I dread sending anything in for repair. I always seem to pick the bum mob.

Fixation have a VERY good reputation, and I believe I've heard of people mentioning Colchester Camera Repair too.

Cheers,
James

I've used A.J.Johnstone, Glasgow.
Their techies will speak to you.

I have used H Lehmann for a repair to my EOS 5 film body a few years ago. I live in Stoke on Trent so it was easy for me to drop it in and pick it up. I understand they are one of the largest Canon repairers in the UK. I'd certainly recommend from my experience albeit a few year ago.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I was hoping more would share their experiences but not to worry. Having looked at the companies websites I'm tempted by Colchester Camera but knowing me that'll put the kiss of death on it :suspect:. I guess there's nothing to choose between them really with no one being any better or worse than another. I'm getting paranoid now :bang:.

i can recommend Lehmann, used to deal with them alot when i was working in the camera trade. but to be honest they are all canon certified so should all be of a high enough standard

AJ johnstone is ok, but if under warranty frankly I'd send it back to Canon at Elstree, they do all the pro repairs.

i've used fixation a number of times - last week was the last time
i broke a flash foot - i put it in the post on monday - had it back friday, i would be happy to send any of my canon gear there

I've used Colchester - they were fine. Did the job.

You've got too many choices now.

I guess this means they're pretty much all ok, especially if the names came from Canon.

Thanks all for the replies. I think I'll just toss a coin, after all they are all Canon approved (I am such a trusting soul)

I have mixed opinions on Colchester.
A friend had them in court because he took a camera in for repair and they dropped it and tried to say he took it in like it, he won his case.
I took my camera in there for a metering problem and they were quite good, they tested it while I waited and confirmed there was a problem but it did take 2 weeks to fix.
I would use them again but only because they are 5 minutes up the road from me.

Well I have to say I am extremely pleased with the service I have received from Canon at Elstree. I posted my 5D off to them last Monday and it arrived back on my doorstep this morning having had the issues that were bothering me sorted. So this is really just a public 'Well done' Canon.

Well, Gofer, glad you got good results, and sent it to Elstree as I felt you should. My 1Ds mk3 has gone off yesterday to fix a problem with the live view function, and I'll report progress. Are you a CPS member?
George

Thanks for the advice to send it to Elstree George. I certainly hope you get as good a service with the repair of your 1Ds mkIII. As I said, I'm always very loathe to send things for repair as I usually get them back in a worse condition, but fair play to Canon, they've restored my faith somewhat with this issue. As regards being a member of CPS I'm afraid I'm not (I'm not even sure I would qualify). Does being a member pull any strings?

Doesn't pull many strings, but you get a quarterly mag which is excellent, and priority repair on 1 series bodies and L lenses.
Qualification is 2 1 series bodies and either 2 or 3 L series lenses, the Canon website has full details and requirements.
