Hi All,

I had a Jessops 360AFD a few weeks back and was very happy with it, but decided to upgraded to a 580EX :D. I now have the option of having a 430EX II, I understand the 580EX has more features, but is there any advantage having a 430EX II instead of a 580EX???

Cheers

Not really. 580ex recycles quicker and can be used as a wireless trigger to fire 430ex's.

Useful article here. Edit: sorry this is for the 580 II... still useful though.

I have nothing relevant to say - ignore me...

I have a 580EXII and love it.

Both the 580 (MkI) and the 430 (MkII) can be used as a master and slave. I would probably go for the 430II personally as it's newer technology and not far off the 'old' 580 MkI spec.

I didn't think the 430Ex MKII could be a master?

I didn't think it did either ? Also I understand the 430EX II is smaller than the 580EX, but does it make a big difference to handling etc..? I use 2700mA Ni-MH batteries which are quite heavy, so not sure how much "lighter" the 430EX II would feel?

After reading those reviews, it doesn't seem it can. I was under the impression it could (was the big update from the MkI) so glad I didn't buy one instead of the 580EXII.

Not tried the MKII 430 but my 580 I rotates a lot further too in comparison with the 430I...

The 430EX MKII does not function as a master. It can only be used on camera or off camera as a slave, controlled by either a 550EX, 580EX or the ST-E2.

If you've already got the 580EX, keep it, and get the 430EX too. That way you have a portable two strobe lighting kit.

two flash kit, although the 580ex2 can do a stroboscopic light it is not a strobe

The only thing you may want a 430 over a 580 for is for use on the new pocket wizard TT system, the 580 (I and II) both give off a lot of RF interference that reduces range. According to the pocket wizards website the 430exII is much better than any other canon flash in this regard.
