Hi all,

Just wondering the differences between the two 580ex models?

Thanks

Faster recycling time is the main one I think!

Edit: 20% faster apparently, full review and differences highlighted here

Chris

nice one, considering selling my Sigma EF-500 DG Super for one. Prices for them on ebay seem to have risen (last one sold for £150).

In addition:

- slightly different control layout
- weather proofing
- pc socket
- external auto sensor
- overheat protection (recycle slows down after 40 full power flashes)

Also, I think it works with a regular optical slave whereas the 580EX doesn't.

Edit: sorry, I didn't see Chris' link to these changes.

Would you get much for your 500 DG Super? If not then you should keep it and experiment with multiple lighting off camera setup :) That's what i did! First of all I started with the 500DG Super as a slave. The 580EXii can control the 500DG Super! :) That was fun but i wanted two off camera flashes. At this point i had one of two choices. Either to use the radio triggers (which would involve losing ETTL-ii and doing things manually) or buying the canon infra red trigger (which maintains ETTL-ii). I went the latter route and am very happy.

The interesting thing is that my 50d couldn't talk ETTLii with the 500DG super (i originally bought the flash with my 300d and ettl worked fine but they changed something in the 50d). However, the infra red trigger and the 580exii both seem to be able to drive the sigma flash just fine :)

Just a thought...

I think there's a known problem with the 50D and some Sigma guns. Sigma will re-chip it for you - it should function as both a master and slave unit, like the Canon 580, and the ST-E2.

silent charging - i.e. no whine as the capacitor fills or what ever its doing. It was a big thing for me.
