Can any one tell me what the difference is between these two flashes and as a newbie with flash is it worth my buying the 580 ex11@ £225 on ebay, also what should I expect to pay for a 2 year old 580 ex
Bob:thinking:

From memory, the mk2 has proper weathersealing, so will form a weatherproof seal with your 1D or other properly sealed Canon!

I think there's a touch more power present, and I'm sure that the Dodgy door to the batteries has been improved.

Two year old 580ex? I'd say £160-180 assuming it's in good condition - check the reflector for any signs of yellowing or burning and also have a good look at the contacts and battery door - the latter is supposed to be stiff, but many have got snapped by impatient togs over the years!

Cheers,
James

Thanks for that James meant to reply earlier been a bit busy

I picked up a 580EX for £140....perfect condition with box and accessories...bargain!!

Another difference is that the 580EX II has E-TTL II and also has a metal hotshoe mount, with a revised attachment/locking system.

The 580EX mkI always suited me fine & is an excellent piece of kit - the MKII has some more features but a lot of it centred around functionality to match the 1D MKIII's featureset as far as I know. If you can comfortably afford it then go for that but I'd be happy with the MK1 if it were me. Good luck with your choice

The EXII has a PC connector which may be important to you if you use the flash off camera and want to trigger using RF triggers. It's the only Canon flash that has it.

Kerso quoted me £229 + delivery for the 580 MkII, which once you take the £40 cashback into account it comes in at £189 + delivery, so thats the one I'm going for :)

Aye not bad at all tbh, I'd origianlly been looking at the 430 but for the difference in price (about £50) its worth getting the 580 I'd say

Has the battery door definately been improved?
yep, huge improvement. No longer have to worry about it snapping when you're opening it :)

Any idea how i can locate 'kerso' to order one. googled the name but doesnt lead to a site or anything. Any help appreciated

I've just ordered the 580EX II from Kerso. The price has gone down a touch to £225 and the £40 cashback will apply, so that's £185 for a brand-new 580EX II :)

You can either PM him on here, or email him at kerso1123@msn.com .... there's also a thread on these forums about him.

just ordered one off e bay from the seller 123fstop. Its around the same price as the one from Kerso so im' happy enough. I just downloaded the cash back form from Canon. It does stress that you need to send in a receipt so will a paypal / ebay receipt be suffice? It also states that the item must have originally been sold by an authorized Canon dealer. Are ebay sellers classed as such?

I've used 123fstop too, he was a really nice bloke..i bought a lens just after the last Cashback offer ended and he was able to help me out with the receipt no problem. It's all gone through ok too as the cheque is on it's way according to Canon.

So just contact him and ask him to email you a receipt.

:)
