I have a nearly mint Canon 550ex that I bought second hand and has served me well but ...

Would it be a good idea to sell it to buy a 430ex II? Is the digital compatibility and more modern technology of the 430exII worth the hassle?

What worries me is that perhaps the 430 will not be powerful enough for bouncing and shooting through umbrellas.

What's the "life expectancy" of a 550ex?

I'm still learning regarding flash photography :D

Stick with the 550. What does the 430 do that you want/need? Flash guns go on forever.

Plus the 550 is slightly more powerful (in theory) and, most importantly, acts as a master controller if you want to move into muliple remote flash photography, which it sounds like you are already planning.

Why not get the 430 and run it as a slave second head off the 550 as master? You could do a lot with that

Keep the 550EX, if anything it has the wireless controller built in, the 430EX are good but i've quickly realised I shouldn't have been tight, and gone for the 580EX to start with.

keep the 550, I had one for ages and when I borrowed a 430 I was distinctly unimpressed with the recycle on it.
