Hi,

I have a Canon 550d. Now if i were to record a video of say a pet bird flying, is the camera recording good enough for me to slow it right down into slow motion? I take it its got something to do with frames per second it records at right?

Anyone shed some light on this? If it can be slowed down whats the best software to do that?

Kind Regards

Canon spec:

Movie Size 1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.976 fps)
1280 x 720 (59.94, 50 fps)
640 x 480 (59.94, 50 fps)

So you could get up to 60 fps (i.e 60 images per second although if its like TV they could be 60 half images to give 30 full images per second) so you could slow it down but how it would look I have no idea. Quick google shows a couple of youtube clips:

Also found this - read the section about frame rates:

Cheers Allan, That second link really helped. Im going to give it a go, any recommendations for post production software that will allow me to slow it down into slow motion?

What i want to do is have the bird flying in very slow motion around the room.

You need to shoot at 1280x720 50p and then conform the footage to 25p, this will give you smooth slow motion.

Do you have editing software?

I have the editing software that came with the canon 550d. Thats it. I looked through the software but dont think it can do it with it. Recommend any?

Kind Regards

sorry i cant recommend any software, I'm new to DSLRs but have a knowledge of video formats etc - rest of info came from google :)

final cut pro or express on mac
sony vegas or premiere pro on windows

As I understand it, if you want to make really slow motion footage, it's good to use a higher shutter speed than the standard 'double the frame rate'.

I think Twixtor or AfterEffects are often used for this type of thing.
