OK - So I know we all know what week 1 is. I have the idea for my shot but I will wait until the 5th before submitting it.

This is to test my new Signature

Welcome aboard Brian....you sound far to organised :D

Now this one I'm looking forward to!

Hi Brian - All set to give the new D5100 a workout in 2013.

Stop teasing and post up your first! :naughty:

Oh, I am SO easy. Is this what it's like doing a 52? Peer pressure, Peer pressure, Push Push Push....

LOL. OK Then: Well I use maths a lot so this is what SIN means to me

cor blimey that's spooky!

I think it's brilliant (I would)

you ceratinly got the "sin" to stand out, just the yellow triangle top right I don't like - but as its the same yellow as on the secondary functions, it's not that obtrusive.

best of luck going forward!

Welcome Brian. Why are you waiting? In this game it's post ASAP before someone else sneaks in first with your idea ;)

:agree: What Marsha said Brian

Sometimes these things happen, some doing the 52 will not look at others submissions until they have their own done. I do see the logic in this and have done it myself a few times in the past but the negative side to this IMHO is that it is a bit of a catch 22 situation.
If you dont get your own photo done and submitted on time, there is a tendancy to get behind with commenting both in your own thread and I feel more importantly on others threads. One can end up playing catch-up.
My feeling is that to go with your idea regardless of whether its the same as someone elses as they are bound to be different anyway. Some themes seem to dictate there will be a number of similar takes, as the theme can be quite narrow at times.
Onto your image, I like it. A quite literal take on the theme but effective nonetheless. The viewers eye is concentrated on the subject by the narrow dof. Its technically good but feel a less central composition would help the image along. Iain

Beautiful DOF really highlights the SIN, and great colours too.

As someone else has mentioned the yellow triangular colour at the top right is a little unwelcome, but otherwise a great start well done - you've absolutely nailed the focus!

Thanks for the comments folks, All good stuff. In my defense RE: Graham's shot the exif data shows I was a couple of days ahead. I felt the yellow triangle worked to help frame the red key and the blue circle, but I can see now that it is not that way after all.

So, 1 down and 51 to go!

Hi, Brian, Sin, on theme and I like the selective focus and close composition, just the aforementioned triangle. WB looks OK so it's  from me for week 1.

Cheers.

Good Start Brian, funny how a word can mean very different things to different minds
I was wondering about focus, was this blurred in photoshop?
Nice sharp shot and bang on topic, well done

I like the image, I have a very similar image awaiting p/p so its now back to the drawing board for me :)

The only thing I could point out would be to have maybe given your calculator a quick hoover first, it looks a little dusty! I didn't notice the orange in the corner until I read the comments, and then it became as annoying as trying to watch a TV program with someone doing sign language at the bottom -- once you've focused on it you can't forget about it!

Hi have to repeat what everyone else says the triangle top right is the only thing I would change

I used a 4x lens filter to shoot the image, this gave me a very shallow depth of field (so shallow that I had to re-shoot it, in my first attempt I didn't have the full word in focus!). I spent ages getting the angle I wanted to minimise the focus on the other keys, I was still unhappy so I enhanced the blur in pp.

Some of the things I have learned/would do different:

1) Depth of field is not just a function of f.stop but it is also influenced by focal length, as I zoomed in it got narrower.

2) I could have saved time and shot it all in focus and used photoshop for all of the blur.

3) People ARE drawn to any light areas in an image!

4) Clean/polish your props for close ups.

5) Get your pic up quickly - if you want to be original!

Thanks to all for your helpful comments.

I like that Brian; perfect DoF, though it must have been PP'd (as was mine), as its circular!?

I agree re the yellow triangle, but don't think it's a huge issue.

Good diverse interpretation of the subject. Inspiring clarity & use of DOF Brian, thanks for posting what you have learned / would have done differently.

Great picture, the Sin really pops out of the image. Nice colour capture too

Having spent the week reading the strobist blog I was hoping to somehow use one of my new found lighting techniques this week - however this image presented itself to me yesterday: It looked to me like they were cuddling up to keep warm... It's the season of scraping your windscreen!

Certainly seasonal Brian, can't say there's much I'd have different about that one - maybe slight ACW rotate to line up the wheels with the bottom of the frame, but that's being picky

Nicely photographed. You've got some good detail in the flakes and managed to expose well considering the snow. I like the horizontal composition with the cars and tyre tracks.

Nowt you could do in camera but a single (red. :)) car would make an interesting and dynamic photograph.

Good show.

Cheers.

I suppose your right it is the season of scraping your windscreen ha! Sorry im just commenting on your first image now! Ive been a busy bee! Really like the use of DOF on your first image really like it, only negitive to me is the yellow on the top right is a bit of a distraction but other than that i like it!

Now to this weeks image! I like your thinking behind it, quite funny. Im no expert but i think the tire tracks in the background draw the eye away from the cars.

i like the way the snow has muted the colours its all a bit central for me though

Brrrrrr..like this but would like to see it without tracks at the top.

Hi Brian :)

Season - Really Like that, The aerials help for some strange reason, the snow looks nice and blustery so well caught getting some motion.

Struggle to crit this... but the black patch in the Tyre tracks detracts just slightly for me, but that's picky - Great Shot

Thanks. I was trying to show the cars as being isolated, so I needed space on all sides.

Thanks, I tried it without the tracks but it had no depth & I preferred it with.

Thanks, I agree about the grid. I will clone that out I think.

Hiya Graham, thanks for your comment.

I actually have rotated it quite a bit (the cars are parked on a slope and the tracks go uphill in real life) I left the jaunty angle because I felt that square on and central the white car looked a bit too orthographic (I'm a designer, its a drafting term) in other words it took away the perspective, and I didn't have enough of that to start with for my liking.

Certainly bang on season
I like watching the snow and you've captured it well
Nice one

looks very cold and perfect for season!.. like the tyre track at the top and agree the cars do look huddled up together :)
