hi all i have a budget of £200ish for a 50mm prime lens being used mainly for photographing reptiles, what are my best options for my budget?

thanks all

again 1.4 seems a good choice. or if you want to save some pennies the 1.8 is not too shabby either!

thanks guys, i was looking at that as my main choice but was just interested to see if anyone recommended spending the extra and go for the sigma 1.4 seems expensive against the canon

The Sigma has had some good reviews but also reports of focus problems. It seems to becoming a bit of a cliche with Sigma but if you get a good copy it's a great one otherwise you'll need to get it calibrated before you get the best from it.

might a macro lens be better for reptiles - depends how big they are I guess!

As I said to you mate on CB the 1.8 would do you or a 50mm macro as you won't be using it wide open for the snakes so the faster 1.4 would be wasted IMO..put the saved cash towards something else..
