Am considering this lens. Should I get it to replace the 18-55 is kit lens?

For the price of the 50mm 1.8 you really can't go wrong with regards image quality and increased low-light performance.
However, as a user of both these lenses I wouldn't look on one as a straight out replacement for the other. IME the 2 lenses complement one another very well for the type of photography I enjoy, but there are some shots that I could never get with the 50mm and some that I could never get with the kit.
It's a case of knowing which to use for which situation.

What type of photography are you looking to use it for - and what limitations of the kit lens are you wanting to overcome?

as above defo keep the kit lens as the 50mm can be a bit long for some shots. try using your kit lens set at 50mm for a while without adjusting and see how you get on.

with a prime lens you have to move in or out to frame the subject rather than having a zoom do it for you which if in a confine space is not always possible.

the 50mm is a great lens for the money and i wouldnt part with mine..

No, get a 35mm prime. You can get the same bokeh, better low light performance (shutter speed goes up with focal length) and it's a much more useful focal length.

I have both and the 35mm is rarely off my camera!

I'd tend to agree with the above first couple of posts, as I've not used the 35mm so can't help you with that one.

I think the 50mm 1.8 is a belter of a lens and would def replace the kit lens at the 50mm range, but your kit lens also gives you the 18-50 range, which is very usefull and in good light, there is nothing wrong with your kit lens.

I'd get the 50mm to complement your lens, rather than replace and restrict some of your shots

Hope this is of some help ....

For the money the 50mm f1.8 lens is just unbeatable - pin sharp from f2.8 onwards and usable at full aperture.

It is also small enough to fit into any pocket on a camera bag.

And it can often be found s/h on here for about £50-£60.

Just to add to my first post, and the replies that have come in since . . . I wouldn't even consider it a pure replacement for the kit lens at 50mm focal length.
In a lot of situations yes, but remember that the kit lens has a very small minimum focusing distance.

I use mine a lot for close-up shots, that I just wouldn't be able to get with the 50mm.
It really depends on the type of photography that you want to do.

Dude take this from my experience.

I had an 18-70mm kit lens with my Sony and then bought a minolta 50mm, I realised I was using the 50mm alot and so sold the redundant kit lens, now I regret it and have done for months because it was great for wide angle shots and now I've got to go out and buy an 18-55mm kit or 35-70mm for the wider than 50mm focal length.

Stick with them both, you won't sell the kit lens for much anyway so you're better off keeping it for a rainy day :)

Charlene,

I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by doing this but........

I was lucky enough to get the 50mm F1.4 this weekend from Jessops for £185.95 due to a big pricing mistake!

I bought the 50mm F1.8 from Kerso on this forum in Oct 2010. I've asked him if he will honour the 12 month warranty if I sell it.

Hopefully he'll say yes, if so I am gonna sell my 3 month old 50mm F1.8 for £65 delivered. Recorded delivery via royal mail.

If you are interested let me know.

Mick
