Hi

I am looking buy an older manual focus 50mm prime lens, and the two above have got great reviews.

I have a Sony A200 and I have the M42 adapter, just wanted some advice, as to which you would choose & why?

So

50mm 1.7 MD ROKKER vs Helios-44-2

Who wins?

Pentacon 50mm 1.8, I don't know the two you've shortlisted but I really like my pentacon

Ahh yes I have seen that one aswell, do you have any photo examples?

Helios punched well above its weight for the price. Minolta Rokkor lenses 'rocked' in their day. Certainly their enlarger lenses were sought after items.

Sorry to say I'd rate either above the Pentacon :(

Thanks, so between the Helio & ROKKOR, which one would you recommend I try out?

I wouldn`t touch a Russian camera or lens with a barge pole. I have a Russian medium format camera and the build quality is rubbish. Pentacon lens are good, but the Zeiss Jenna are a step above. Funny thing with a pentacon lens. On test the periphery of the lens is sharper than the centre. Still, when I first started I took a shot in a cemetary with a pentacon lens and I could read the inscription on a stone from about 30 yards. Using a watchmakers eye glass of course. I have a few Fuji M42 lens and to be honest they are pooh.

I have to say I'd try the Rokkor - and, if you can, with it reversed if it's going to be used for macro stuff

are you sure? The original KMZ made Helios lens have been around for decades and are still used to produce fantastic results. I have lots of M42 lens and the 58mm F2 Helios is the pick of the bunch.

How about buying both, there not expensive and then selling the one you don't like here on tp, you could even get the pentacon as well just for trying it out.

The Helios 44 lenses (44, 44-2, 44M, 44M-4 etc.) are superb and can produce some lovely bokeh :) They seem to have lasted better than the Pentacons, many of which now have stuck aperture blades and stiff focusing. I prefer the Pentacon, if I'm honest, but both are great.

The Rokkor won't work on a Sony unless you convert it to M42 (some surgery required) or buy a Minolta MD adapter with a glass element. The glass element is needed in order to focus to infinity, and will degrade image quality.

Personally, I would plump for a Helios 44-2. They can be had for £5-10.

Many Soviet lenses are great for the money! Beside, Zeiss Jena are soviet lenses, aren't they?
